Post-Secondary Options Work Force Talk to people in different industries. Job shadow if possible. Start building relationships now! Work on developing a resume and getting references. Think about a career, not just a job WORKReady Assessment (www.kansasworks.com) 5 and 10 year goals.

Post-Secondary Options Military Determine which branch you prefer and why. Talk to a recruiter. Take the ASVAB. Your recruiter can help you set this up. Determine how long you want to commit. Have a backup plan. Plans after the military

Post-Secondary Options Technical Schools, Community Colleges & Universities Find schools that offer programs of study in your area of interest. Visit campuses. Talk to admissions and financial aid office. Be prepared to apply for scholarships

Technical School, Community College or University? There are advantages to all of them. Technical School Community College University Great career opportunities with certifications earned through technical schools. Offer quality education at a lower cost Student stays in one place until completion High Completion/Placement Rate Smaller campus/class size More degree options Many programs allow you to earn an associates degree along with your certification. Most credits will transfer to a 4 year university. It is best to check with individual universities to make sure the credits you are taking will transfer. Financial aid and scholarships opportunities MAY be better. Earn while you learn with “On The Job Training” opportunities More personal experience with closer relationships to faculty. More diversified campus life.

Readiness Tests Accuplacer Used as an admission and placement tool for Community Colleges and Technical schools. Juniors who indicated during pre-enrollment that they wish to take dual credit courses will have the opportunity to take this assessment during school hours. Students may retake the Accuplacer free of charge upon request. Students can retake the Acculplacer two times in a school year.

Readiness Tests ACT/SAT – required for admissions to 4 year universities. Vocational schools and community colleges also use these tests to determine course placement and scholarships. The next ACT will be administered on April 8th. The registration deadline is Friday, March 3rd and you can register with an additional fee until March 17th. It will be administered here in Lakin For most students the SAT is not necessary. If a student wishes to take the SAT it is available through Garden City High School

If College or Technical school is right for you Choosing the right school Visit with college representatives when they come to Lakin. Visit Campuses (can start that now) Consider programs offered What is YOUR cost (may be affected by scholarships/grants) Every college is required by law to have a Net Price Calculator on it’s web site. What school is the best fit for the STUDENT For regents schools, must consider minimum requirements.

If College or Technical school is right for you Admissions Begin applying for colleges and technical schools that are being considered Most universities have an application fee ($30-$50) so be selective Community colleges and technical schools often don’t charge. Schools won’t offer scholarships without an application on file Be in contact with admissions and financial aid offices of schools being considered. It is ok to be undecided

Paying for post-secondary education Costs to consider Room and Board Tuition Books Student Fees Travel Expenses Incidentals

Updated Cost Information Every college/university must have a cost of attendance estimator or calculator on their website. That is where you will find the most updated information available. I have compiled most of the schools in Kansas into a list on my school web site. www.usd215.org/147828_3

Paying for post-secondary education Scholarships Local/regional (church, school, work, community, etc.) Institutional (source of 70% of scholarships) National - Online scholarship searches. Grants Federal and State Governments Most are need based (determined by FAFSA)

Paying for post-secondary education Job while in college Savings Student Parents Others Loans Student Loans Parent Loans

Scholarships – What to do NOW! Be organized Challenge yourself in classes. Be active in school groups and organizations. Begin online scholarship searches. Start creating a resume of activities, awards, honors, work experience, community activities, etc. Think about who you would want to write reference letters. Volunteer for community service. Be a good person.

Other Info In October of 2017 you can begin filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. FAFSA. This is an important part of financial aid. The deadline in Kansas is April 1. Some schools have earlier deadlines. I will have a Scholarship/FAFSA Night for seniors and their parents in the Fall. The date will be determined later. I encourage all to attend.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.
