Diseases of the Respiratory System CHAPTER 15 Diseases of the Respiratory System

Diseases of the Respiratory System—Code Range J00-J99 Diseases of the respiratory system are reported from Chapter 10 of ICD-10-CM. This chapter contains codes for diseases of the respiratory system. Numerous instructional notations should be referenced at the start of the chapter.

Structures of the Circulatory System Lungs—Main organ where gas exchange occurs Trachea—Windpipe Bronchi—Branches off the trachea Larynx—Voice box Pharynx—Throat Vocal cords—Where sound or speech is produced

Acute Respiratory Infections—J00-J06 Many common diseases are found here: J00—Acute nasopharyngitis, common cold J01—Acute sinusitis J02—Acute pharyngitis J03—Acute tonsillitis J04—Acute laryngitis and tracheitis J05—Acute obstructive laryngitis [croup] and epiglottis J06—Acute upper respiratory of multiple and unspecified sites

Structures of the Upper Respiratory System © Cengage Learning 2014

Influenza and Pneumonia—J09-J18 Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by various viruses. Diseases reported here include: Influenza differentiated by type—J09-J11 Pneumonia differentiated by type—J12-J18

Other Acute Lower Respiratory Infections—J20-J22 The categories are differentiated as follows: J20—Acute bronchitis J21—Acute bronchiolitis J22—Unspecified acute lower respiratory infection

Other Diseases of Upper Respiratory Tract—J30-J39 These categories report: Rhinitis Chronic sinusitis Nasal polyp Abscess, furuncle, and carbuncle of nose Chronic diseases of tonsils and adenoids Peritonsillar abscess Chronic laryngitis and diseases of vocal cords and larynx

Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases—J40-J47 These categories report: Bronchitis Emphysema Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Asthma Bronchiectasis

Lung Diseases Due to External Agents—J60-J70 This block of codes reports diseases that are caused by agents such as coal and talc dust, chemicals, gases, fumes and vapors, radiation, and drugs. The coder must identify the agent for proper code selection.

Other Respiratory Diseases Principally Affecting the Interstitium—J80-J84 Diseases reported here include: Acute respiratory distress syndrome—J80 Pulmonary edema—J81 Pulmonary eosinophilia, NEC—J82 Other interstitial pulmonary diseases—J84

Suppurative and Necrotic Conditions of the Lower Respiratory Tract—J85-J86 Diseases reported here include: Abscess of lung and mediastinum Pyothorax

Other Diseases of the Pleura—J90-J94 The following diseases are reported here: Pleural effusion Pleural plaque Pneumothorax Other pleural conditions, such as chylous effusion, fibrothorax, hemothorax, and unspecified pleural condition

Remaining Categories J95—Intraoperative and postprocedural complications and disorders of respiratory system, not elsewhere classified J96-J99—Other diseases of the respiratory system

Official ICD-10-CM Guidelines for Coding and Reporting The Official Guidelines address: COPD and asthma Acute respiratory failure Influenza due to avian influenza virus Ventilator associated pneumonia

Coding Practice Select the correct code for: Acute suppurative pharyngitis

Coding Practice Solution Main term to reference in index: Pharyngitis Modifying term: (Acute) (Suppurative) Code Assignment: J02.9
