Warm Up # 33 What is a “Proxy War” and how does it reflect the tension that existed during the Cold War?

Back to the Soviet Union Tensions Rise Again

USSR after Stalin: Are we good? 1954: Nikita Khrushchev takes charge. Stalin’s lieutenant; was super brutal Carried out killings Denounces Stalin and blames him for WWII loses Taking down the cult of personality Loosens government control (a little) 1959: Visits the US (WHAT!!) 1961: Put up Berlin Wall “Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart”

Poured all their resources into industrial production of arms and the space race. Neglected needs of the people Polluted a lot Imported grain from US.

Space Race 1957: Soviets launch Sputnik World’s first satellite US establishes National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 1958: launch satellite too 1961: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin = first man in space 1969: Am. Astronaut Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

Wait, how come Cuba gets involved? 1950’s: the US supports brutal Cuban leader Batista to gain benefit of trade. 1958: Fidel Castro and Che Guevara leads a revolution Fidel Castro sets up a Communist regime Sought military support from the Soviet Union Political exiles flee to Florida

Khrushchev places missiles on Cuba Could hit most U.S. cities US Pres. Kennedy demands they be removed and blockades Cuba. Soviet ships head toward Cuba to break the blockade War seems unavoidable

Okay, okay – I’ll Move the Missiles Khrushchev removes missiles in exchange for the US removing missiles from Turkey. US puts economic sanctions on Cuba. A direct phone line is set up between the Pentagon and the Kremlin (Red Phone)
