SCENARIO Our class has won free tickets to go on a class trip. The destination is up to us. Where should we go?

On the way, there is an accident On the way, there is an accident. Suddenly, the class is stranded on a deserted island. There is no one else around. There are no adults, anywhere. And your cell phones don’t work. Both Ms. Matthews and Ms. Yoo have miraculously found their way back home… YOU.ONLY. HAVE. EACH. OTHER.

Which rules do you think we should institute? Since our simulated classroom is realistically within the school, we still must adhere to certain basic school rules. Which rules do you think we should institute?

YOU ARE ONE TEAM and you must consider EVERYONE’S survival: It is up to you to decide how to proceed… EVERYONE: Be sure to copy these questions down into your notebooks!

You have FIVE minutes to complete this… PART ONE: You have FIVE minutes to complete this… Will you elect a leader? How will you decide? How will you ensure your safety and survival? Will you need to establish any rules? Why? What are your consequences for rule breaking/no work, etc? Which roles do you need to establish? To whom will each job/role be assigned? Why do you need these roles?

You have 10 minutes to complete this part… PART TWO: You have 10 minutes to complete this part… Are you going to devise a plan to escape? To survive? Will boys and girls have different jobs? Will everyone have a designated role? Who is left out? Do you trust each other? Does everyone agree on the chosen leader?/The way you have things organized?

In your notebooks answer this question: What do you think would happen if young people actually ruled the world? How would it change for the better? How would it change for the worse? Explain in 1-2 paragraphs

REFLECTIONS… Which people, if any, emerged as leaders? Were there any conflicts between “leader types”? If so, what were they and how were they resolved? Were you personally comfortable with this simulated situation? Why/why not? Could this “free atmosphere” work every day? Why? What would need to be done to ensure continuing productivity? 5.
