Lightning Round Review What is nationalism? What is militarism? What are alliances?

Europe Before World War I People in Europe had a lot of nationalism (pride and love) for their countries in the early 1900s. Because of this nationalism, they wanted to become stronger, so they built up their armies (also known as militarism).

Imperialism With all of this nationalism and militarism, countries also started to believe that they deserved more land so they could have more resources for their awesome country. Many European countries started to take over land all over the world! Taking over another country’s or group of people’s land is known as imperialism.

Imperialism Many European countries started empires by colonizing countries all over the world. European countries mainly colonized Africa in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Imperialism sounds very similar to empire.

TENSIONS ARE HIGH! So, not only did countries in Europe have a lot of nationalism, and strong armies, but they were also competing to get land all over the world to make their homelands stronger. Therefore, what do you think happens when you have a lot of strong countries competing to become the strongest nation in the world?

War Breaks Out! WAR BREAKS OUT! World War I broke out over one event. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand the heir to the Austro- Hungarian Empire was shot! Austria_ Hungary then invaded Serbia. This event started World War I!

World War I Starts!

World War I The war started like a game of dominoes: A Serbian shot Archduke Ferdinand. The Austrians needed to get revenge, so they invaded Serbia. The allies of Serbia, then came to the side of Serbia and fought against the Austrians, and pretty soon, most countries in Europe were fighting in the war.

World War I The way soldiers fought in World War I was very different than the way soldiers fought in previous wars. Why do you think the fighting was so different and much more brutal?

Technology The war was much more brutal because of all of the new technology that was invented at the start of the 20th century (early 1900s). machine guns mustard gas airplanes tanks THIS WAS A MODERN WAR, not like old wars that were fought.

World War I Fighting The causalities (number of people who died) in World War I were enormous because of the new technology and Trench Warfare. Trench warfare made battles really bloody and last really long. A Trench is a long tunnel were soldiers would sleep and fight.

Conclusion Nationalism made countries want to make their own countries more powerful. Because of nationalism, countries started to make their militaries stronger. Countries also formed alliances. Trench Warfare was really deadly. World War I was a modern war with new technology and new ways of fighting.
