South East High School January 10, 2017 PD Banked Day # 9

Community Builder Share one memory from Winter break and one resolution you made for the new year... 1-2 minutes

Setting the Context Purpose: Outcome: Learn new student discussion/engagement strategies to support the Schoolwide Observable Goal (SWOG) and ELD Standards Connect the Teaching and Learning Framework to new student discussion/engagement strategies Outcome: Plan to apply the new student discussion/engagement strategies in your classroom practice Embed new student discussion/engagement strategies in the Lesson Design Cycle 1-2 minutes

Teaching and Learning Framework and SWOG are emphasized because student discussion/engagement strategies are integral components of these initiatives 1-2 minutes

School Wide Observable Goal (SWOG) “Students and teachers will use purposeful groups for collaborative discussion and assignments as a method for academic achievement and learning.” Teaching and Learning Framework and SWOG are emphasized because student discussion strategies are integral components of these initiatives and they reinforce the new emphasis on oral communication in the ELD standards 1-2 minutes

TLF: 3b2/Discussion Techniques and Student participation Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions. Can you identify what level of proficiency in the TLF this language aligns to? What is the Rubric language being expressed here? Ineffective, Developing, Effective or Highly Effective 2-3 minutes

Connections to ELD Standards Part I: Interacting in Meaningful Ways A. Collaborative 1. Exchanging information and ideas via oral communication and conversations B. Interpretive 5. Listening actively and asking or answering questions about what was heard C. Productive 11. Supporting opinions or justifying arguments and evaluating others’ opinions or arguments Presenter points out that the new ELD standards emphasize student discussions. This is really for ALL students. If you don’t have a copy of the standards, See Mr. Cazares 1-2 minutes

What discussion technique strategies do you already use? Think time: 1-2 minutes List 3 strategies you use under “My Ideas” Stand and find a colleague to engage in the “Give One, Get One” strategy Write under “Your Ideas” the “get one” strategy you acquired, and thank your colleague Repeat steps 3 and 4 until “Your Ideas” is complete -Presenter/PD Team Facilitator-Emphasize that this strategy can be used in the classroom with students -Timer is recommended -Presenter will tap into audience’s prior knowledge: What engagement strategies do you use in your class? -Pass out graphic organizer (1-2 min think time) 5-7 minutes

Teacher Presenter develops her own question or prompt for pair discussion Teacher Presenter decides how to present and adjust minutes 2-3 minutes

Teacher Presenter decides how to present and adjust minutes Strategy comes first, then the content… Presenter chooses topic: 8-10 minutes

8-10 minutes Teacher Presenter decides on content on cards Teacher Presenter decides how to present and adjust minutes 8-10 minutes

Spectrum Strategy Step 1: Line up alphabetically by the college you graduated from with your Bachelor's Degree and share what your major was. Step 2: In triads, discuss one of the strategies that you could implement into your lessons. Step 3: Share something interesting that you heard in your triad about incorporating one of these strategies. PD Team Facilitator - Spectrum Strategy can be used to enhance CONTENT learning (line up according to the amendment that you think shaped this country/ which part of the cell is the most important/ line up by element properties). Emphasize the importance of including team building activities into lesson plans. 5-7 minutes
