Science Leadership Network May 9, 2017

Overview of the morning Introductions What are our big 5 for implementation? Mixed groups Like groups District Science Conference Planning for next year

Introduction At your tables introduce yourself to your colleagues and identify your greatest success this year related to science education.

Before we start our group work On your own take a few minutes to reflect on and note what struck you the most from: Science Teacher Learning: Enhancing Opportunities, Creating Supportive Context Guide to Implementing The Next Generation Science Standards Identify the top two most important ideas you got from either text. Use a sticky note to connect your idea to a passage in the text. As a group pick one thing to share with entire group

The new standards require everyone to learn Science Teachers’ Learning: Enhancing Opportunities, Creating Supportive Context The new standards require everyone to learn Learning over a significant length of time K-12 collective learning “Quality instruction is not due simply to a well-prepared teacher with good intentions; it requires ongoing support from others, a solid understanding of the content, well-tested materials, and time.” (p. 41-42) Learning is needed in pedagogy, content, and student learning.

Science Teachers’ Learning: Enhancing Opportunities, Creating Supportive Context Teachers did not experience learning science the way we now need to teach it. Gap between current instructional practices and the vision of Framework. Teachers need knowledge in three domains: Knowledge of content and students Knowledge of content and instruction Knowledge of content and curriculum Talk about ambitious teaching practices.

Science Teachers’ Learning: Enhancing Opportunities, Creating Supportive Context Consensus model of PD Content focused Active learning Coherence Sufficient duration Collective participation

How should we fill the jar? Show them the jar and the stones, gravel and sand. Have them discuss how fill it to get as much in as possible. Share out. Fill jar both ways.

Priorities – First things first We need to focus on no more than 5 critical things moving forward with implementation. We can eventually get to the sand but we can’t start with it. If everything is a priority than we really don’t have any priorities.

Things to remember as we work today We are going to talk a lot about what adults need to do in year one of implementation but lets remember it is to support all students having access to high quality K-12 science learning opportunities. Assimilation

Instructional Shifts Focus on explaining phenomena or designing solutions to problems Three-dimensional learning Disciplinary core ideas Science and engineering practices Crosscutting concepts Coherent learning progression: conceptual change overtime NOT layering “schooled knowledge” over naïve understanding. Science for ALL students We need to keep these in our minds as we think about supporting teachers next year.

In groups Identify your big 5 1 Supports Barriers Supports Supports 5 2 Barriers Vision of the Framework Barriers Note: We will do this in mixed groups, like groups, and district groups. You can identify less than 5, but you can’t identify more than 5. Supports Supports Barriers Barriers 4 3

In your groups Share all your ideas freely first and write each one down Rank your ideas to identify top 5 Identify supports and barriers to each Identify connections between them

Things to remember as we work today Assimilation

In your groups 1 Supports Barriers Supports 5 Supports 2 Barriers Vision of the Framework Barriers Note: We will do this in mixed groups, like groups, and district groups. Supports Supports Barriers Barriers 4 3

Before we move Make note of your group’s top five Be prepared to share with your next group Hang your poster up

Gallery Walk Walk around and review every groups’ top 5 Identify your overall top 3 with dots Elementary teachers Middle and high school teachers Elementary administrators Middle and high school administrators District administrators

“Like Groups” Teams Elementary Teachers Middle School Teachers Secondary Teachers K-6 Building Administration 7-12 Building Administration District Administration Everyone briefly shares the top five from their group with rationale Identify your “Like Group’s” top five Draw it out and identify connections, barriers, supports

In Your “Like Groups” 1 Supports Barriers Supports 5 Supports 2 Vision of the Framework Barriers Supports Supports Barriers Barriers 4 3

Before We Meet in District Teams Take a few minutes to: Be prepared to share the top 5 from your first two groups Think about how the top 5s from previous groups relate to your district

With your District Colleagues 1 Supports Barriers Supports 5 Supports 2 Barriers Vision of the Framework Barriers Show people the parking lot where they can note what they need from OCM BOCES. Supports Supports Barriers Barriers 4 3

District Share Each district will share their top priority

It’s Go Time: Science for ALL November 7th at Roxboro Middle School Hoping to recruit up to 6 teaching teams Application forms on conference web site All live research lessons must relate to equity and access in science

It’s Go Time: Science for ALL Keynote: Dr. Okhee Lee, NGSS writer and professor at NYU Science focused workshops: Dr. Malcom Butler, University of Central Florida – How can we support all students in the secondary science classroom? Dr. Brian Mandell, SSEC – Leveraging elementary curriculum materials to support equitable science instruction TBD – Hoping for one focused on leadership Lesson Study focused workshops: Dr. Catherine Lewis, Mills College - How can lesson study support equity in the classroom? Dr. Akhiko Takahashi, DePaul University- How can we build school wide lesson study? Dr. Krystal Barber, SUNY Cortland – Facilitated panel discussion with area teachers with lesson study experience These plans are still tentative and not finalized

Science Professional Development NYSSLS for 7th Grade Teachers – July 31st and August 1st, 8:30-3:30 NYSSLS for 8th Grade Teachers – August 2nd & 3rd, 8:30-3:30 NYSSLS for Administrators – August 7th, 8:30-3:30 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers are welcome to attend both the 7th and 8th grade days Tentatively planning on running another administrator and 7th & 8th grade teacher PD in December

Book Study Next Year Please vote (pick 2) as you leave: NGSS For All Students Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards Seeing Students Learn Science: Integrating Assessment and Instruction in the Classroom Helping Students Make Sense of the World Using Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices
