The Short Sightedness and its Pitfalls Gene Modification The Short Sightedness and its Pitfalls

What are Genes exactly? -Genes are passed down through generations - Genes are like a code your body uses to make itself - Genetic code is not written in stone

Recent Developments -Scientist are forming ways to treat genetic diseases such as Huntington disease -Scientist have also been able to modify how a child will look while they are still in the womb -Researchers have found “superior” Genetic code in the human Genome -They include advanced muscle growth and fast twitch muscle

Shortcomings of Genetic modification - Cells can only take so much genetic data before they refuse to function - Splicing DNA together can lead to unforeseen consequences - Genes tend to lean on what is the most energy efficient, breaking this down could lead to dire circumstances

Dangers of Genetic modification -Companies claiming a certain set of genes to be copyrighted -How far estranged can one be to still be considered human under the law? -Modifying humans to make an army

Connections to Science Fiction - Science Fiction uses it in the light that Gene mods can “uplift” an individual - Writers of Sci Fi tend towards to see everyone as individuals, Gene modded individuals seen as possessing an advantage, but not a clear “winner”
