Lord’s Prayer Sermon Series Overview Introduction to the Lord’s Prayer Praise and Thanksgiving in the Lord’s Prayer Confession in the Lord’s Prayer Supplication in the Lord’s Prayer Genesis 1:26-28

Matthew 6:5-6 (NIV84) 5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Hypocritical prayer tries to show off for people. Genesis 1:26-28

Matthew 6:7-8 (NIV84) 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pagan prayer tries to show off for God. Genesis 1:26-28

Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV84) 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ The Lord’s Prayer is sincere, short and simple, and sorry for sin. Genesis 1:26-28

Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV84) 14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Unforgiving prayer tries to show off for ourselves. Don’t pray hypocritically prayers to show off for people, pagan prayers to show off for God, or unforgiving prayers to show off for ourselves. Instead, pray sincere, sort and simple, sorry for sin prayers that are more about God than us. Genesis 1:26-28

Luke 11:1 (NIV84) 1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus probably taught the Lord’s Prayer more than once. Genesis 1:26-28

Luke 11:2-4 (NIV84) 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ” The Lord’s Prayer is short and sweet. Genesis 1:26-28

Luke 11:5-10 (NIV84) 5 Then he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’ 7 “Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. We can ask God for things not following normal manners, since this is the way children ask their parents for food every day. If you can even get food from a cranky neighbor in the middle of the night, how much more will God give you what you need when you ask? Genesis 1:26-28

Luke 11:11-13 (NIV84) 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” We can pray to God confidently as our heavenly Father since He is better than any earthly father. If you can expect food from your sinful earthly father, how much more will your prefect heavenly Father give you good things when you ask for it. Genesis 1:26-28

9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV84) 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ [For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.](KJV, NKJV) Luke 11:2-4 (NIV84) 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘… Father …, your kingdom come. … 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ” Genesis 1:26-28
