Lessons of Church Planting Leadership from Moses I CAN STILL USE YOU. Lessons of Church Planting Leadership from Moses

Your past does not define you. Your failures do not disqualify you Your past does not define you. Your failures do not disqualify you. Your mistakes will not destroy you.

Desire for control and approval produce anxiety. Lessons from Moses

1. No one. Exodus 3: 11 But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” 2. Can’t speak. 3:13 But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?”

4: 13 But Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else.”. 3. Won’t believe me. 4:1 But Moses protested again, “What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?” 4. Can’t talk. (again!) 4:10 But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.”. 5. Don’t want to. 4: 13 But Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else.”.

Control. Approval.

"When you're 20 you care what everyone thinks, when you're 40 you stop caring what everyone thinks, when you're 60 you realize no one was ever thinking about you in the first place" Unknown

Anxiety is not a thing.

It’s possible to be publicly successful while going through a spiritual funk.

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Galatians 1:10 Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.

2. Don’t sacrifice your family at the altar of opportunity. Lessons from Moses

Exodus 4:18 So Moses went back home to Jethro, his father-in-law Exodus 4:18 So Moses went back home to Jethro, his father-in-law. “Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt,” Moses said. “I don’t even know if they are still alive.” “Go in peace,” Jethro replied. 20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God.

You can increase the probabilities. You can’t guarantee. You can increase the probabilities.

Do your family and friends say you have a problem? Do you continue even though you are hurting people? Do you arrange your schedule, priorities, or spending around it? Is it driving others away? Are you denying it is a problem or trying to keep it a secret? Groeschel, Craig; Groeschel, Craig. The Christian Atheist: When You Believe in God But Live as if He Doesn’t Exist (pp. 133-134). 3. Relationships matter. Lessons from Moses

Exodus 4:27 Now the Lord had said to Aaron, “Go out into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So Aaron went and met Moses at the mountain of God, and he embraced him.

Predatory Large and in charge Against Needy Transient

Four recommendations: Have a clear vision. Unclear vision leads to wasted time resolving side issues that should have been settled in the beginning. Have a specific, written, membership covenant and have the people that will join the church read, agree, and sign it. Mosaic SDA Church in Hillsboro, Oregon has one of the best that I have seen. It will save you a lot of grief later, when conflict arises. Provide continual reminders of the vision. Vision leaks. Just because you presented it, don't assume people heard it, understood it, or remember it. Have patience. You don't just want more people, you want the right people.
