The Civil Rights Movement 1954-1965’s

Civil Rights Vocab Brown v. Board of Education (1954): Supreme Court ruling declaring that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional

School Integration 1. Brown v. Board of Education*** Overturned Plessey v. Ferguson supreme court case that said “Separate but equal” Illegal to segregate public schools Problem: Segregation in society still existed in the South and many states did not want to integrate schools Ex. Little Rock 9 Result: Integration of public schools began but took years! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quu_mv-nSfE

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Pledged nonviolent resistance: peaceful protest or noncooperation with authorities that is designed to achieve social or political goals Assassinated at a Memphis hotel room while organizing a strike One of the most influential people in the Civil Rights Movement Civil Disobedience: the nonviolent refusal to obey a law that the protester considers unjust

How it was …

Some of Martin Luther King’s tactics Montgomery Bus Boycott- Buses segregated African Americans had to sit in the back of the bus NAACP and Rosa Parks decide to break the law (she gets arrested) Af. Am. Leaders in the city decided to stage a 1-day boycott Elected Martin Luther King Jr. to lead a longer boycott Lasted 381 days Reading about Browder v. Gayle

Some of Martin Luther King’s tactics Children's March Birmingham the most segregated city Leader MLK took charge Many went to jail for participating in non violent resistance to segregation 1,000 Af. Am youth marched to the city center News stations captured the violent actions by police towards the children https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ySEdr2r0ys

Some of Martin Luther King’s tactics Lunch Counter Sit-ins Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee Trained students in civil disobedience Do not use violence! Students sit in restaurants who won’t serve Af. Am. Why would they do this??

Some of Martin Luther King’s tactics Freedom Rides CORE: Congress of Racial Equality Ride on buses to see if complying with integration of interstate buses Met many acts of violence and arrests in southern states https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8CAKAXR-AM

Some of Martin Luther King’s tactics March on Washington 250,000 people march in Washington D.C. Largest public gathering in U.S. history MLK gave his “I have a dream speech” “I have a dream that one day....” Wanted to show Congress public support to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wDU-oYQN04

Emmett Till http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMdSYxZqIXc Young 14 yr. old African American brutally murdered in Mississippi in 1955 What was the South like before the Civil Right movement? What impact on the Civil Rights Movement did Emmett Till’s murder have?

Civil Rights Vocab Civil Rights Act of 1964: banned discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, or national origin- the most important civil rights law passed since Reconstruction Voting Rights Act of 1965: outlaws literacy tests and other tactics used to deny African Americans the right to vote Complete TV boxes Fill out TV box Events Montgomery Bus Boycott Non violent protest- Lunch sit ins, children's march March on Washington

Malcolm X Malcolm X was a Muslim, and believed in Muslim principles. His most famous line was “By any Means Necessary”. He believed in fighting back physically. Whatever had to be done to get freedom he was all for it whether it be violence or nonviolence.

Malcolm X tactics Malcolm X had a different perspective regarding the march. He felt that integration would destroy the black and the white man. He felt that American blacks should be more concerned with helping each other. He felt blacks should start by giving the same race self-respect first. He was suspicious of whites, willing to use “by any means necessary” to achieve equality. He was a segregationist. Fins a video clip
