History of Graduation Requirements 1st Regents exams 1900s 1925 68 different Regents exams 1970 21 different Regents exams 1980s Local diplomas 1995 Regents diploma requirement 1998 1st Safety Net (RCT) 2000s 2005 + Additional Safety Net Options 2015 4 required Regents exams How many of you remember the 1st Regents exams? If so, you look great for your age The 1st Regents exams were given in 1878, showcasing NYS longstanding expectations of student achievement through high quality instruction. Minute to look at timeline, possibly solicit thoughts Over time we’ve begun to narrow the focus across subject areas to think deeper about the outcome (diploma) instead of wider by just taking more exams. 68-21 regents exams, now minimum requirement is 4, with an additional pathway to show individual strengths

Graduation rate calculation data.nysed.gov Before we consider current requirements, let’s review how a district’s graduation rate is calculated. # of diploma recipients after 4 years (local, Regents) ___________________________________________ # of students that entered 9th grade Nondiploma (credentials), still enrolled, and GED (TASC) are in denominator as they enter 9th grade, but not helpful in the numerator 4 years later. Dropout actually is a separate measure with identified criteria and accountability status.

*Project Based Assessment Multiple Pathways http://www.p12.nysed.gov/specialed/gradrequirements/home.html Courses/Credits Required Regents Exams Appeal/ Safety Net Only apply to Regents exams Pathway Option Choose one Diploma Options May include CTE endorsement ELA 1 Math 1 Science 1 Social Studies Additional Math Additional Science Additional Social Studies SED Approved LOTE SED Approved Humanities SED Approved Arts SED Approved CTE CDOS Credential *Project Based Assessment (Proposed 1/16) 22 units of credit: ELA SS Science Math Health LOTE Arts PE Electives Appeal of Regents score Regents with Honors Compensatory Option Low Pass Option *Low Pass Appeal *Superintendent Determination Only for students with disabilities Regents with Advanced Designation Regents Diploma *Only for students with an IEP Regents (through appeal) -OR- Local (through appeal) Starting with a student (on left) entering 9th grade, they are expected to earn 22 credits over 4 years in the subject areas listed. For students with significant disabilities, they are instructed and assessed against different learning standards, therefore, they don’t accrue credits and the only available outcome is the Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential. Throughout the 4 years, once completing a Regents level course, students have the opportunity to take the Regents exam for that course. In 4 years, it’s required that they pass 4 Regents exams in the core areas to be eligible to receive a diploma. Provisions have put developed to support students in passing these exams: Appeal of Regents – intent to replace a rescore to find a few points. This is available to ALL students for up to 2 exams. There is an additional appeal option available to ELLs that have entered the US in 9th grade or after. The Appeals process is a local process involving the principal, committee of teachers and sign off by the Superintendent. Students with disabilties those with an IEP, which also may include, depending on the option, students with a 504 or declassified in 8th grade or after, have Safety Net options available to provide flexibility in what’s considered passing. In addition to the 4 required Regents exams, student must choose a Pathway to complete diploma requirements. The Pathway could include an additional Regents exam (red), a locally developed/SED approved exam (blue), or completion of the requirements to achieve a CDOS credential (Career Development and Occupational Studies). Explain CDOS requirements. Project Based Assessment has been proposed, no updates as of June. With credits accrued, 4 Regents exams passed and a Pathway option completed, students are eligible to receive a diploma. Local diploma is awarded if Safety Net options are applied.Regents with Honors, passing grade of regents=90%. Regents with Advanced Designation, 8 regents exams and additional coursework. This took the place of the Major/minor/concentration that we used to talk about. The CDOS credential, if applied as a pathway option, is awarded as a supplement to a Regents or Local diploma. If a student is not successful in passing the required Regents exams and/or courses, the CDOS credential can be awarded as a stand alone credential highlighting work readiness.
