Mitosis: Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a daughter cell receives the same number of identical chromosomes as the parent cell. Mitosis is necessary for the growth and repair of organisms. Orgasms are made of cells. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlN7K1-9QB0 http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__mitosis_and_cytokinesis.html

The Cell Cycle Interphase: Most of a cell’s life. The cell grows & DNA duplicates. Mitosis: Cell divides. Includes 4 phases.

Mitosis

The Chromosome During interphase, the chromosomes exist as chromatin (stringy mass) Each chromosome is duplicated during interphase The original chromosome is attached with a centromere to its sister chromatid

Stages of Mitosis Prophase Chromosomes become visible as they shorten and thicken In animal cells, structures called centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell and provide attachment for spindle fibers Nuclear membrane begins to disappear.

Stages of Mitosis cont. Metaphase Sister chromatids move toward the equatorial plate (middle) Spindle fibers are attached to centromeres

Stages of Mitosis cont. Anaphase Centromeres divide and the chromatids, now daughter chromosomes, move to opposite poles of the cell.

Stages of Mitosis cont. Telophase Chromosomes become chromatin Spindle fibers dissolve Nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromatin Followed by cytokinesis (division of cytoplasm)

Cytokinesis: Cell divides into 2 identical cells In animal cells Cleavage furrow develops, pinching off the cell into two In plant cells Cell plate forms into a new cell wall
