Polarity, Water and Biological Molecules Molecular Shape Polarity, Water and Biological Molecules

Molecular Shapes Molecular bonds form when electrons in the valence shell hybridize This results in a change in the shape of the electron orbital which affects the shape of the resulting molecule VSEPR theory helps predict the effect of this hybridization on the shape of a molecule

VSEPR Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Based on the notion that electron pairs in any orbital will want to occupy a space as far apart from each other as possible The negative charge of electron pairs involved in bonds is slightly reduced by the influence of the protons in the related nucleus

VSEPR Most biological molecules are made up of atoms with four electron pairs around the nucleus of an atom Based on the number of bonds involved there are four possible molecular shapes Molecular shape and charge distribution determine biochemical behaviour
