Workshop on D3.3 1-4 Nov 2016 Request Explore data requirements to assess size distribution of a stock Explore potential size-based indicators (SBI) that are not redundant to D3C1 and D3C2 Explore methods to describe the trend over time in SBI Explore the setting of thresholds and reference levels for any potential methods SBI- Size based indicators
Sized based indicators explored L95 : 95thpercentile of the length-frequency distribution in survey catches (for some stocks may be also obtained from commercial data) Cpuemega or SSBmega : abundance of mega spawners, either from survey data or from stock assessment data Pmega : proportion of mega spawners Pmat : proportion of mature individuals Megaspawner – spawners greater than length of optimum yield
Preliminary conclusions (1) Data source will impact perception of SBI – survey, catch, stock assessment Must use methods that reduce sensitivity to recruitment (young fish) Challenge to determine reference points Not a challenge to determine trends and limits based on past, prefer reference points based on conceptual understanding
Preliminary conclusions (2) SBI using absolute values are generally redundant to D3C2 Relationships between proportional SBI and D3C1 & D3C2 less clear Simulations can test likely scenarios Fished at D3C1 Fmsy North Sea plaice
D6/D1 request Evaluate indicators for assessing pressure, impact and recovery on the seafloor from bottom-contacting fishing. Using this assessment, demonstrate trade-offs in catch/value of landings relative to impacts.
