#1 – Newton’s 3 Laws: Identify + NHL Hockey (4/21/17)

#1 – Newton’s 3 Laws: Identify + NHL Hockey (4/21/17) Copy the chart below. Make it big enough to write 1-2 details in the space for each topic. Fill in details from the video as you watch. Be prepared to tell your partner what you wrote down afterward. https://www.nbclearn.com/nhl/cuecard/56615 1st Law 2nd Law 3rd Law 1st – The motion of a player (speed and direction) will only change if a force (body check) is applied. The hockey puck would move forever in a straight line (on a frictionless surface) until a force stopped it. 2nd – A big player’s hit will cause a small player to accelerate. Using F = ma you can calculate the final velocity of 2 players after a collision. 3rd – Any force one player puts on another gets put back on them. This means that the big guy gets just as much force applied to him as he applies to the small guy (but the small guy accelerates more due to his smaller mass).

#2: Energy Intro Reading/?’s + Bill Nye (4/26/17) (5 minutes) Read page 212 and answer the questions below. How are gas hydrates produced? Where are they found? (be specific) Why are gas hydrates important? What is a disadvantage to mining gas hydrates?

#3 - Energy Conversions & Conservation (4/28/17) SKIM through pp. 222-225 and pp. 229-231 to find answers to the questions below. Answer the following questions in your SPIRAL: Give an example of kinetic and potential energy being converted back and forth. Give an example of chemical energy conversion. Give an example of electrical energy conversion. What is a reason that not all potential energy is converted to kinetic energy on a rollercoaster? Why isn’t all kinetic energy converted to potential energy? What is the law of conservation of energy? Why is perpetual motion impossible? 1) trampoline, pendulum 2) digesting food, battery 3) hair dryer, alarm clock, light bulb, blender 4) friction 5) energy is neither created nor destroyed (total amount of energy in a closed system is always the same) 6) some energy is always lost as heat (thermal energy)

#4: Bill Nye – Waves (5/10/17) https://www.schooltube.com/video/2b2001da6d8146dbb388/Bill%20Nye%20-%20Waves

#5: Falling Slinky (5/11/17) How does a slinky fall? Copy the chart below in your spiral. Choose a prediction to fill in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAA613hqqZ0 Prediction Observation Inference 1: top end falls first 2: bottom end falls first 3: both ends fall together 4: the two ends meet and then fall TOP END FALLS FIRST. Why? Gravity pulls the bottom end down BUT tension pulls the bottom end up – the two forces are equal and opposite (balanced) so the bottom of the Slinky remains at rest. When you let go of the top end, the tension changes and propogates down the spring. Wave: When contact is made with a golf ball, a wave is sent up the shaft but it takes time to reach the golfer’s hand.

#7: Project Check-in and Bill Nye (5/17/17) What are you thinking about making for your instrument? What materials have you collected and/or do you plan to use? If you cannot answer both questions 1-2: What will you do between now and Tuesday to come up with a plan? What help do you need from me?

Be prepared to share yours if you get called on!!! http://www.schooltube.com/video/a46f21f6bf2346f792ab/Bill%20Nye%20-%20Sound Be prepared to share yours if you get called on!!!
