Themes hope courage death blindness war prejudice adventure survival fear loneliness sadness

Prejudice One theme from The Cay is prejudice. I can support my answer because I see the prejudice statement, Chapter 3, “I woke up with a giant negro staring at me.” And in Chapter 4 “Those people.” In Chapter 1, “barefooted Chinese people.” In Chapter 8, “I know now what my mom was saying, they had their ways and we had ours.” In Chapter 9, Phillip said, “Stupid man I can not see.”

Main characters Phillip; loves his home and does not want to leave the Island. Mom; wants to leave the island because she does not like the war at his home. Timothy; works on the boat until it blows up and he leaves on a raft. Dad; likes the Island and does not want to leave because of his job.

Phillip’s prejudice 1. I see many of them-p. 32 2. Black and ugly- p. 33 3. Because he was black- p. 35 4. Positive pure African- p. 43 5. Giant negro out in the ocean- p.41

Timothy’s survival techniques 1. Eats 1/2 of a roll- p. 45 2. Only lets Phillip get 4 drops of water- p. 36 3. Ripped o board to make a shelter- p. 34 4. Eats fish in stead of bread-p. 36 5. Moved so Phillip could be warm-p. 44 6. Made a cure for Phillip with cloths-p. 46 7. Told Phillip not to look at the sun-p. 36 8. Pulled Phillip aboard the raft-p. 31

Phillips rudeness Phillip looked at the sun even though Timothy told him to not to. 2. Called Timothy black. 3. Says old people did not sleep much. 4. Says he’s positive pure African. 5. Phillip yelled for water like a rich kid.

Main character I think the main character is Phillip because the author talks about Philip throughout the whole book. Phillip is prejudice because in Chapter 9 he said, “stupid man I cant see.” Also in Chapter 4 he said, “those people”. Phillip is also stupid because in Chapter 8, he wanted to see the island and fell off the boat. He shows that he is stupid because Timothy says not to look at the sun. He does anyway and becomes blind.

By Emma Schwartz& Schuyler Topel Epilogue By Emma Schwartz& Schuyler Topel Hello, my name is Phillip Enright Jr. today I am going to tell you about what happened on the cay, what happened after, and other things of that nature. The cay was small, but I never really saw it because, I was blind. Someone told me it was shaped like a melon, and it was a mile long from North to South beach. It had sea grape and palm trees, but most important it’s home to my best friends grave. His name was Timothy and I visit him every week, once or twice. The cay has changed a bit because, of the fact that WWIII just ended. I was stuck on the island twice, once when I was young, and one time when I went to go visit Timothy. There were bombers in the sky, and I had to take shelter. I was there for a week, but I knew how to survive. That changed during WWIII because, the bombers flew too low, and as a result of that they dropped one bomb on the island, and chopped the tops of the palms off. Timothy’s grave was safe. I would know what happened. I was there. The cay was exactly what I pictured it would look like. During the war the coral reef was blown up, but the fish are still here. The sea grape has become over grown, and the thick vines have thinned. The first time I revisited the cay I was nervous. Would Timothy’s grave still be there? I wondered if I could even remember where the cay was. When I got there I was so relieved that I slept over night on the island. The cay has changed my life in so many ways. First of all it made me mature. After the cay I never played with Henrik again, I felt that he was too immature. I would rather hang out with the black adults down by the dock. I never depended on my parents again; I could take care of my self. After the cay I grew up.
