The time of Castles, Knighthood, Troubadours, Chivalry, Churches . Middle Ages

Castles Castles back in the middle ages were complicated. They had possibilities of being attacked, but trust me they were ready. They had holes in their walls called arrow loops. They could fit arrows through them going outward but never inward. They also had something called a postern gate. What that did was when the other army was busy attacking they would sneak up behind them. That is just two examples of the many things the castles had. The castles back then were ready for anything. Royalty

Knighthood Knights were dressed to impress. I mean Knights in shining armor is not just a saying. But all of that armor must have been heavy. And it was. I mean you have the helmet. The cuisse, greave, gauntlet, and the coat of mail. That is just the beginning though. You still have the visor, shoulder piece, elbow piece, and the knee piece. That so far sounds a bit heavy. Then there is the gorget, tasse, cuirass, sabaton, and last but not least the brassard. That is not only heavy but expensive.

Troubadours Troubadours encouraged chivalry. They were knight minstrels. They wrote songs about knights doing heroic things. They also wrote songs about knights doing heroic things for a woman. The love was pure and required by all knights. The respect for a woman was mandatory. It was a big change from being practically part of the furniture.

Chivalry Chivalry had different meanings. Originally it meant you were good on a horse. But as the 12th century rolled around it was kind of a code of conduct for knights. They had to be kind, truthful, loyal, and polite to women. Also very noble in battle. It was so much to live up to, many of them didn’t.

Churches Churches meant a lot back in the middle ages. Knights would become knights through the church. Before they became a knight they would spend all night in the church praying. They didn’t eat or sleep all night. When dawn broke they dressed in white robes that meant they promised to stay pure and faithful. The churches were everything back then.
