Health in all (Transportation) Policies Elizabeth Whitton, AICP AMPO Annual Conference ewhitton@metroplanorlando.org

MetroPlan Orlando is the metropolitan planning organization for the Orlando urban area. Established through federal and state statutes, our primary responsibility is to allocate federal and state transportation dollars in 3 counties in Central Florida. We work with each county government, our 22 municipalities, other transportation agencies, the state Department of Transportation, and the US Department of Transportation to advance our mission

2 million residents 68 million tourists 300,000 residents since 2010 Our Region 2 million residents 68 million tourists 300,000 residents since 2010 550,000 daily visitors Our pocket of the country has a few unique characteristics, which really put the emphasis on why we are incorporating health considerations into everything we do. We are one of the country’s fastest growing areas with 2 million residents--300,000 are new in just the last 6 years. We are home to both Disney World and Universal Studios. These theme parks and other attractions brought 68 million tourists to our 3 counties last year. And on average, our daily population swells by 550,000 people. A couple of years ago, leadership at MetroPlan Orlando realized that our health activities could be bigger. Our demographics and growth offer the opportunities. But also, we see this as simply the right thing to do.

How can the region’s transportation system support economic, physical, social, and mental well-being?

And I want to quote the Surgeon General’s Walking Call to Action here: “The transportation, land use, and community design sector has a role in walking and walkability by managing federal, state, tribal, and local resources that support roadways, sidewalks, bikeways, public transit, community planning and zoning, and economic development…nearly everyone is affected by the decision and plans of this sector.” (page 18) Board has adopted 3 of these strategies as its multi-year priorities *Source: CDC’s A Practitioner’s Guide for Advancing Health Equity: Community Strategies for Preventing Chronic Disease

How do we incorporate health data into transportation planning? Corrine Drive Complete Streets Study How do we incorporate health data into transportation planning?

Corrine Drive Study

Corrine Drive Study A pedestrian/biker-friendly area that makes visiting destinations on the street a pleasure rather than an ordeal to be endured.  A place I can walk or bike to and around without fear of injury or death. A place where I can walk from shop to shop, eat a bite, grab a drink and take a rest on a shaded park bench outside, my kids playing on a playground or kicking a ball on a grassy area.

We can identify priorities and spot improvements Corrine Drive Study We can identify priorities and spot improvements We are ready for health behaviors research Health Profile: https://metroplanorlando.org/wp- content/uploads/Health-Profile.pdf
