A showcase of Beckers Green Daily Golden Mile

How it all began… In 2013 Beckers Green were asked to be a pilot school for this initiative https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z3UqIFI1XU&feature=youtu.be

Getting started Easy to set up. Sports Leaders can help design and measure the course. Sports Leaders can supervise the daily walk. Children of all abilities can participate. No need to change into PE kit. No special equipment required. Can take place whatever the weather. It can be as basic as just completing the mile walk each day or you can submit your data half termly to Active Essex for a chance to win prizes or input data on the Golden Mile website to generate milestone certificates and create challenges both intra and inter school. Both Active Essex and Golden Mile have all the resources you need to get started.

Keeping motivated Creating walking challenges linked to other sporting events or topics, keeps the children motivated. Aviva Women's Cycle Tour (Braintree to Clacton 86 miles) Intra school competition to see which class could walk the distance covered by the cyclists and reach the destination first.

Further challenges Winter Wish – December 2015 (2637 miles) Braintree – North Pole (3369 miles) Road to Rio (Olympics) July 2016 (5804 miles) Braintree – Rio – Braintree (14,889 miles) Winter Wish – December 2016 (1918.5 miles) Braintree – Lapland – Braintree (4150 miles)

Daily Golden Mile February 2016 – Introduced the Daily Golden Mile. School Councils discussed and voted in favour. Walk as a whole school at lunchtime To start the week, every Monday morning the whole school congregate for an outdoor assembly and walk a mile to prepare us for the week ahead.

Benefits Getting everyone outdoors and active Children socialise with children from other classes as they walk. Older children motivate the younger children. Year 6 children ‘buddy’ with a foundation child when they first start school. Children are more settled and ready to learn after their walk. Less problems in the playground It improves physical, social and mental health & wellbeing
