English III – October 17, 2017 Do Now: Take out paper for notes Agenda: Quick notes on how to write an intro After notes, you may get a laptop Write your intro! Write your intro on the SAME document as your position statement and Precis (underneath your 2nd Precis)

Introduction Hook Bridge Thesis broad Relevant info/connection specific

Hook Getting your reader’s attention. You do this by making a general statement that anybody can understand/relate to. Although your statement is general, it should still be connected to the ideas in your thesis. NO-NOS – You may not use: Questions: You are not allowed to address the reader. Quotes: Rarely done correctly and a cop-out Definitions: Cop-out and unnecessary in most cases

My thesis (aka position statement) Embarrassing individuals and groups of people in the public venue, and no longer letting them keep their shame private, is beneficial to society and an effective way to discourage others from repeating the same bad behaviors. (Thesis includes my position on the topic and the possible consequences)

My hook: In this 21st century world, technology is becoming more and more a part of the everyday existence of Americans, and essential to their everyday lives. This is a statement that anyone can understand Notice how my hook begins to introduce the idea of technology and social media.

Bridge You must connect your hook to your thesis in a logical manner. This is where you would introduce necessary background info for your audience to fully understand the topic. Remember, this is an introduction…so actually INTRODUCE your topic – don’t shove it in your reader’s face!

Put it all together… In this 21st century world, technology is becoming more and more a part of the everyday existence of Americans, and essential to their everyday lives. Tech has taken its place where even 10 years ago people would never have imagined it would be.  One place technology has taken hold is in the realm of personal relationships. What used to be private has now become public. For good or bad, people are “airing their dirty laundry” for the world to see. This trend of putting our problems on line for the world to judge has led to a new phenomenon: Public shaming. Embarrassing individuals and groups of people in the public venue, and no longer letting them keep their shame private, is beneficial to society and an effective way to discourage others from repeating the same bad behaviors.
