Engineering @ Newton North Where Science & Technology INTERSECT! We have a great engineering program here at NNHS. We have a varied program that includes the traditional engineering programs as mechanical and electrical engineering )basic intro courses) as well as both introductory and advanced robotics courses. For the last few years, we have also had an advanced engineering/robotics courses…

Engineering Program Goals Know what engineers actually do and explore different fields of engineering Be prepared for success in a college engineering program We really want to stress to our students what engineering classes entail at the college level so that our students are not too surprised by what is being asked of them.

Engineering Design Process We use the MA state frameworks for teaching the EDP as well as some other interesting EDP steps, such as the one published by Tufts as well as the NU version. There is also a neat one put out by NUVU.

Example Introductory Project Paper Rockets: Introduction to the Engineering Design Process This year I was searching for a project to do with my students and then saw the demo of the paper rockets one of the last days of our CAPSULE program and thought that it would be perfect as an intro to the EDP. It was! The kids were really engaged and came up with some interesting things to test. One thing that surprised me was that the group that finished first with their design also shot their rocket the farthest (over 100 yards!).
