Johnson Dual Credit 2018-2019

What is Dual Credit Exactly? The Dual Credit Program at Johnson allows a student to enroll at San Antonio College (SAC) to earn college level credit while at the same time fulfilling high school academic requirements. Dual Credit classes at Johnson are full year courses. Students can take any dual credit class at Johnson that they qualify for.

Why Do I want to be in Dual Credit? The Dual Credit courses will apply to most Associate Degrees at San Antonio College and may transfer to other colleges or universities. As with all transferring courses, it is up to the accepting college or university to honor dual credit course work. Review the FAQ section in the handbook for more specific details.

Why Do I want to be in Dual Credit? Earns you college credit Saves your parents $$$ Challenging course work prepares you for the rigor of college work!! Looks great on transcript when applying to college. (If you make good grades!!)

A common question asked is, “What is the difference between AP and Dual Credit?”

The Answer: AP Classes Dual Credit Classes AP exam(s) costs money AP classes require taking the AP exam in May; most colleges and universities award college credit if you score a 3 or better on the AP exam AP exam(s) costs money AP classes are open enrollment Once you pass the Dual Credit class, you will have a college transcript with grades to provide to the university that you attend Most colleges will accept the college transcript, but the colleges decide what credit that you will earn (For example, Biology AP may be awarded a science elective credit instead of biology credit) Dual Credit costs nothing except the testing fee of the TSI exam Dual Credit classes require students to apply and qualify

For most Johnson Dual Credit classes, the AP students are learning the same material as the Dual Credit students!!

Considerations Before Taking Multiple DC Classes Some colleges may limit how many dual credit classes a student can enter with as a freshman applicant How dual credit grades and credits are posted is based on the way the college/university chooses to interpret the college transcript Just because you can take dual credit classes may not mean you need to take them all…it really should be a thoughtful decision. Consider picking classes that could apply to your major. AP scores are universal and tend to be accepted everywhere…taking the AP exam is a great back up to a dual credit class

Current Johnson Academic Dual Credit Classes AP Biology (8 hours of college credit – 4 per semester) College Algebra (4 hours of college credit – 4 for the year) AP English IV or AP English IV GT (6 hours of college credit – 3 per semester) AP US History

Current Johnson Academic Dual Credit Classes AP Spanish Language (6 hours of college credit – 3 per semester) Art Appreciation (3 hours of college credit – 3 for the year) Accounting Business Management

College Course Numbers AP Biology (Biology 1406/1407) College Algebra (Math 1414) AP English IV or AP English IV GT (English 1301/1302) AP US History (American History 1301/1302)

College Course Numbers AP Spanish Language (Spanish 2311/2312) Art Appreciation (Art 1301) Accounting (Accounting 2330) Business Management (PBAD 2339)

How are Dual Credit Classes Ranked? All of the Dual Credit classes that are AP receive the 1.29 multiplier for AP AP Biology AP US History AP English IV AP Spanish Language Any Dual Credit classes that are not AP receive the 1.15 multiplier like a Pre-AP class College Algebra Art Appreciation Accounting Business Management

Applying for Dual Credit is a Process that takes Time and Effort First: Complete a college application through ApplyTexas Second: Complete online Test Preparation and then take the TSI test Third: Submit Electronically all your Dual Credit Forms

Dual Credit Steps Step 1 – ApplyTexas application Step 2 – Banner ID# Step 3 – Go FAARR and the PAA Step 4 – Testing Step 5 – Dual Credit forms Step 6 – Verify Schedule

Scores can vary based on the course How Do I Qualify? You must have specific scores on the SAT, ACT, or the TSI test (most students use the TSI test to qualify) Test Math Reading SAT 530 480 ACT 19+ 19 Composite 23 TSI 350 351 Essay/Writing 4/340+ Scores can vary based on the course

Something to Consider If you don’t earn qualifying scores the first time you test, you might consider waiting until next year to take a Dual Credit class. The test is a very strong indicator of whether a student is prepared to be successful with the college level material that will be presented in the class.

Johnson TSI Test Dates We will have four remaining initial test dates at Johnson: SATURDAY February 3, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. SATURDAY February 24, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. SATURDAY March 24, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. SATURDAY April 7, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. All our dates can also be used to retest if needed

Test Scores Please electronically submit the Test Score Form to identify what type of test you are using to qualify TSI Scores will be sent to SAC for you by Johnson (students will receive a hard copy of their TSI scores that they need to keep for their records) SAT/ACT Scores – Johnson will submit an official transcript with those scores to SAC

Timeline for DC Steps 1-3 Step 1 – ApplyTexas application Allow 48 -72 hour turn around time for application to process at SAC in order to complete the Go FAARR and PAA. Step 2 – Banner ID# Located in ACES account under the Student tab. Step 3 – Go FAARR and the PAA Students must create a username and password to sign in to ACES to complete these modules. Usernames can be obtained on the ACES website.

Step 1 - ApplyTexas You must complete the profile before continuing on to the application You must select a 2 year college specifically San Antonio College You must select Fall of 2018 and Creative and Communications Arts as the school with a major in Dual Credit For the Residency section carefully follow the instructions in the dual credit handbook

Step 2 – Banner ID# After your application is submitted, wait 5 to 7 days for your SAC email confirmation If you have not gotten your Banner ID#, begin checking the ACES site After 10 days, call SAC at (210) 486-0177 or (210) 486-0896

What is ACES? ACES is your SAC account that maintains your grades and courses Just like you log into your student portal, you should log into your ACES account numerous times a semester You will be required to log into your ACES account to complete your Test Preparation modules before TSI testing You will be asked to log into your ACES account in August to check that you are registered for the correct Dual Credit classes you want to take You can check your ACES account to see your midterm and final grades

Place your screenshot here Get ACES User Name is under ACES Login Information 1st link and get My Banner ID Number is the 2nd link.

What is a BANNER ID number? Your Banner ID # is your student ID number for SAC This number is confirmation that your college application to SAC has been received and processed You will need this number to register for your TSI test You will need this number to submit on all of your Dual Credit forms

Step 3 – GoFAARR and PAA Log into ACES and complete the modules It will take you about an hour or more to prep for the TSI test When you finish, you will receive  marks. You will need to print the  screen as your proof of completing Step 3.

Step 4 – Testing Most students will take the TSI test, rather than the SAT or ACT Register for the TSI test on the Johnson Electronic Handbook under the TSI section Once registered, you will bring in your  screen and your money to the counseling office There are additional resources and information about the TSI test day in the handbook

Step 5 – Dual Credit Forms This is the most important step to guarantee you are on the Dual Credit list sent to SAC The forms are electronic and can be completed as soon as you have all your information (you can submit even before TSI testing is completed) A confirmation email will be sent once the forms are reviewed and finalized (be patient – it takes time to check all the forms coming in )

Step 6 – Verify Schedule In May, check your NEISD schedule that you receive to make sure you see a D listed next to the course number Most courses will not have Dual Credit in the title; they will only say AP US History If you want to make changes to your Dual Credit classes, talk to your counselor

What I need to Do? Please begin the process This process is long and takes time to complete each step There are significant time delays between some steps and students will not meet the deadlines if they procrastinate Thoroughly read all the information posted in the online Johnson Electronic Dual Credit Handbook (we will let families know as soon as this goes live) Our handbook is set up like a website and has numerous sections that you need to click through and review Deadlines are firm and set by Alamo Colleges and NEISD The Dual Credit Electronic Forms must be submitted by the deadline (the sooner the student submits the forms the sooner we can confirm their dual credit status)

Additional Items you Might Need: If you and/or your parent/guardian are: Active duty military or dependent:  Complete the Military Verification Form in the Dual Credit Handbook Resident Alien:  Provide a copy of the front and back of the Resident Alien card Not a U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien:  Provide a copy of the front and back of your residency documentation

What Grade do I need to Maintain? SAC: You will earn credit as long as you maintain a 70 in the class (SAC grades are posted as A, B, C, or F not numerical) To earn Performance Acknowledgements under the Distinguished Level of Achievement on the Foundation Plan, students must earn 12 hours of DC with an 80 or better to be posted on the transcript

How Does the College Credit get Transferred? First: Johnson student will request a final high school transcript be sent to SAC in May Second: Students will log into their ACES account in June and request a SAC final transcript be sent to their university Last: Check with your university during July/August to verify that they have gotten the SAC college transcript

Critical Information about Dual Credit: Students need to understand that once in a Dual Credit class they are beginning a permanent College Transcript. Thus, you want to maintain good grades and should try to make a B or better in your Dual Credit class. Please be aware of the withdrawal deadlines each semester. Failure to meet the deadlines could result in an F or a W on your college transcript. Students are limited on the number of W’s they can have while in college.

Current Dual Credit Students If you have qualifying scores for the courses you want to take next year: You will only need to submit the Dual Credit Checklist, Alamo Colleges Dual Credit Consent Form and the Test Score Form You will NOT have to retest OR reapply!! If you do not currently have the qualifying scores for a certain class, you will have to take the TSI to re-qualify or use SAT/ACT scores. If you took a year course that only gives a semester of college credit, like College Algebra, you will need to complete a new ApplyTexas application and submit forms. If you dropped your only Dual Credit class, you will also need to completely start over again as a new student.

Required Dual Credit Forms The following forms must be electronically submitted by March 7, 2018: Dual Credit Checklist (Step 5) Alamo Colleges Dual Credit Consent Form (Step 5) Test Score Form (Johnson DC handbook) Any additional forms (resident alien card or military verification form) that might be needed will have to be hand carried to the Johnson Counseling Office

Johnson Electronic Dual Credit Handbook The Dual Credit Handbook will guide you through the entire Dual Credit process. It has a section entitled Frequently Asked Questions which is very helpful!! Please pay attention to the part of FAQ’s that deals with withdrawing from a Dual Credit class. Johnson’s Electronic Dual Credit Handbook will be available on the Johnson Counseling website. We have included everything you need to complete this process; however, it will require reading through all of the sections thoroughly before you begin!!!!
