Week 9 Day 1 Make a box in your vocab journal like the one below Week 9 Day 1 Make a box in your vocab journal like the one below. Title it day 1. Separate it into 4 sections. Write the root word at the top of each box. Write it’s definition, origin, and examples in each box. medi omni philo sci Definition: middle Origin: Latin Examples: medium, medieval, mediocre, mediate Definition: all Examples: omniscient, omnipotent, omnivore, omnipresent Definition: love Origin: Greek Examples: philanthropist, audiophile, philharmonic, philosopher, bibliophile Definition: to know Examples: omniscient, scientist, conscience, unconscionable, unconscious

medi (Latin)=middle

medium Definition: in the middle of small and large Sentence: She needs a medium sized shirt.

medieval Definition: the history during the Middle Ages Sentence: In medieval times there were knights and different types of clothes people wore.

mediocre Definition: of middle quality Sentence: The new restaurant is not as good as my favorite. I would say the food was mediocre.

mediate Definition: to go in the middle of an argument to solve it Sentence: Teachers often have to mediate fights between students. Parents mediate fights between their kids.

omni (Latin)=all

omniscient Definition: all knowing Sentence: If a story has omniscient POV we know how all the characters feel.

omnipotent Definition: having all power Sentence: The king thought he was omnipotent and ruled with pride and arrogance.

omnivore Definition: an animal that eats all things, plants and meat Sentence: Bears eat fish and berries, so they are omnivores.

omnipresent Definition: being in all places Sentence: Mrs. Lott wishes she was omnipresent so she could be at her son’s basketball game and her daughter’s softball game at the same time.

philo(Greek)=love

philanthropist Definition: a person who loves charity Sentence: I call her a philanthropist because she volunteers somewhere different every weekend.

audiophile Definition: someone who loves sound Sentence: Larry is an audiophile and always wants to listen to music.

philharmonic Definition: love of music Sentence: Mrs. Newsome became a music teacher because she is philharmonic.

philosophers Definition: a person who loves wisdom Sentence: Greek philosophers created writing systems so we could share wisdom with each other.

bibliophile Definition: a person who loves books Sentence: He has an entire room of books in his house because he is a bibliophile.

sci(Latin)= to know

omniscient Definition: knowing everything Sentence: Some people believe God is omniscient.

scientist Definition: a person who has knowledge about natural things Sentence: The scientist was doing research in the lab on plant cells.

conscience Definition: knowledge of right and wrong Sentence: He had a bad conscience after getting in a fight on the bus because he knew it was wrong.

unconscionable Definition: knowing right and wrong, but not caring Sentence: If someone is unconscionable, they do not feel bad after making mistakes or being mean to someone.

unconscious Definition: not knowing what is going on around you Sentence: My friend was unconscious because she passed out after seeing the needle for her ear piercing.
