Renaissance Culture and Humanism

What was the Renaissance? Period following the middle ages (1450-1550) “Rebirth” of classical Greece and Rome Began in Italy Moved to northern Europe

"The Renaissance gave birth to the modern era, in that it was in this era that human beings first began to think of themselves as individuals. In the early Middle Ages, people had been happy to see themselves simply as parts of a greater whole – for example, as members of a great family, trade guild, nation, or Church. This communal consciousness of the Middle Ages gradually gave way to the individual consciousness of the Renaissance.“

Before Humanism People acted like children There was very little personal upkeep or manner expectations Women excluded from social “gatherings” Birth was the defining point for social standing and status Education and personal capability didn’t exist within the social society

Humanism Pursuit of individualism Basic culture needed for all Recognition that humans are creative Appreciation of art as a product of man Basic culture needed for all Life could be enjoyable Love of the classical past People could make decisions and learn what was best for themselves.

How this affected individuals Women introduced to balance male “manliness” with female “tenderness” Birth loses some substance Humanists believe one should uphold personal manners and good-behavior Believe that education and universal capability should contribute to social success

Humanists on Intellect Liberal arts introduced: grammar, poetry, history, politics Importance in human, not divine, matters Education offered to wide audience Rekindled interest and influence of Greek and Roman classics Incorporated a necessity for literary truth, original and “uncorrupted” Desire to investigate info. at source creating large collections of original manuscripts
