State of our Atmosphere (Dec 2006) Note: not everyone was warm. Actual Global Composite Temperature Anomaly for December 2006

State of our Atmosphere Many of you may look at this, and think that everything that we have seen this Fall is a positive when it comes to breaking the warm trend. I will show you why this is not true... With such a favorable setup both on the Atlantic and Pacific side, you would think that the Aug/Sept/Oct period would have come in as one of the coldest 3 month periods ever for the US. This is not true. Actually... none of the final August, September, or October numbers came in even as low as the coldest 1/4 months going back to 1895. The coolest month was September which was only 29th coolest overall. As a whole, the Aug/Sept/Oct mean US temp came in right around what is average to slightly below average. What I'm trying to say by all this is that although temps were cool this Fall, they could have and should have been so much cooler given the setup. This is yet another sign of the very warm overall cycle that the Northern Hemisphere is currently in.

Estimated Northern Hemisphere Temperatures Over The Past 2,000 Years Reconstructions of Northern Hemisphere temperatures for the last 1000 years according to various older articles (bluish lines), newer articles (reddish lines), and instrumental record (black line)

Estimated Northern Hemisphere Temperatures Over The Past 2,000 Years B. 1822 C. 1834 D. 1838 Note the variance that can occur when comparing years. For example, some areas of the globe have had their warmest years prior to 1900. However there is a clear overall global warming trend over the years. Even a very cold year like 1978 shown below was relatively warm globally speaking. 1978

State of the Northern Hemisphere (Fall 2006) “Finally, here are stats for the warmest year-to-date temperatures for the US (Jan-Oct): 1934: 57.95 deg F 1st 2000: 57.93 deg F 2nd 2006: 57.85 deg F 3rd 1998: 57.77 deg F 4th 1921: 57.47 deg F 5th 1990: 57.41 deg F 6th 1938: 57.21 deg F 7th 1986: 57.20 deg F 8th 1931: 57.17 deg F 9th 2005: 57.10 deg F 10th We are currently only 0.10 degrees behind 1934 for 1st place all time. If the rest of November and December goes as I think it will... 2006 will have a very good shot chance at being the warmest one year period ever for the US.” -SSC-

State of the Northern Hemisphere “What I'm trying to say by all this is that although temps were cool this Fall, they could have and should have been so much cooler given the setup. This is yet another sign of the very warm overall cycle that the Northern Hemisphere is currently in.” SSC (2006)
