Establishing a Leadership Certification Program Johnny Robinson- Tarleton State University Director of Student Leadership Programs Michael Barnette- Tarleton State University Coordinator of Transition & Family Relations

Outcomes Analyze emerging paradigms of leadership development specifically addressing new programs from conception to implementation. Discuss best practices of branding and marketing of leadership programs to heighten student interest. Engage in leadership development exercises which can be utilized for use with emerging student leaders.

Tarleton State University Located 60 miles Southwest of Dallas/Ft. Worth in Stephenville, TX (Population 20,000). Founded 1899- Member of Texas A & M system since 1917. Enrollment- 7,900 Estimated Cost per Academic year- $13,333 100+ student organizations Division II Athletics 60 undergraduate degree programs, 22 graduate, & 1 doctoral degree.

Student Leadership Programs Leadership, Greek Life & Volunteer Programs Established in 1998 to support successful T.A.S.L. (Tarleton Association of Student Leadership). 1998-2000: Avg. 100+ members Leadership development & Individual service (3 semester program) 2002-2008: Steady decline & Organizational leadership

Planning & Re-Launch 2008-09 Less than 10 members Little student interest Focus groups Professional development Leadership Advisory Board Faculty- College of Ed, College of Business, General Studies, University Housing, FYE, & Student Is a leadership certification program still viable? Program Implementation Fall 2009- 25 applicants = 21 accepted into program Co-Curricular- 8-10 weeks Ropes Course 14 students completed (66% persistence rate)
