How is a team like an ecosystem? An ecosystem is a community of living (biotic) and non-living things (abiotic) that work together.  It can be as large as a desert/lake or as small as a tree/puddle. Everything in an ecosystem is dependent on each other.  If there isn't enough light or water or if the soil doesn't have the right nutrients, the plants will die. If the plants die, animals that depend on them will die. If the animals that depend on the plants die, any animals that depend on those animals will die.

Ecosystem List ways these living organisms are dependent on each other.

Biotic and abiotic factors Scientists classify living things in an environment as biotic factors. Examples: plants, animals, bacteria, and even you are biotic factors Scientists classify nonliving things in an environment as abiotic factors. Examples: desk, pen, pencil, and textbook

Can you find the abiotic and biotic Factors?

Depending on each other Biotic and abiotic factors make up an ecosystem. It can be small, like a single log, or very large, like a desert. All of the living things in an ecosystem depend on nonliving things to survive. Ex: To breathe and lay eggs, a frog depends on the water in a pond Each organism in an ecosystem has its own place to live called a habitat. Different ecosystems provide different habitats, for example a penguin could not find a habitat to meet its needs in a hot desert.

What are populations and communities? In a habitat, there are many different types of organisms and each organism is a member of a different species. A population is all the members of a species that live in an ecosystem. Ex: Bullfrogs in a pond make up one population All the populations in an ecosystem make up a community. A pond community may have populations of bullfrogs, fish, water lilies, and dragonflies. The size of a community depends on factors such as food, shelter, and light.

LESSON Review Describe factors that make up an ecosystem? How are populations different from communities? Fact or Opinion: An entire ecosystem can exist under a single rock? Explain. How do light and temperature affect the ability of an ecosystem to support life? Name abiotic and biotic factors.
