Presentation transcript:

Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1 How do you warm up? How do you get better? What do you do after the game? Before beginning this powerpoint, complete the warm-up activity (word sort on literary genre). Remind students that yesterday you looked at the types of literature. Today, we will look at the best ways to read and understand literature. Open powerpoint. Discuss how students warm-up and practice for different activities (playing an instrument, playing a sport, playing a video game). Explain that we’re going to look at ways to prepare for and get better at reading. Go to next slide. Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1

Getting better at literature Think about the big idea. Ask questions about the literary elements. Pay attention to the genre. Make connections. Record your thoughts. Tell students that to warm-up to read, they need to ask some questions first. Have someone read box #1 on p. 11 aloud. Have students turn to p. 30 in their text. Point out the “key idea” for “Seventh Grade.” Then, have them turn to p. 32 and point out the “analyze visuals” note. Look at the “Background” information on p. 33. Explain that these before reading features help students ask the right questions to be warmed-up for the reading. Go on to the next slide. Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1

Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1 Being an active reader Preview Set a Purpose Connect Use Prior Knowledge Predict Visualize Monitor Make Inferences Explain to students that readers use strategies for success, just as people do in sports, games, etc. Model for students the strategies they might use to better understand p. 12 of their text. (See the notes in the margin of the TE for previewing, setting a purpose, etc.) Read paragraph 1 on p. 12 aloud as students follow silently. Tell students they will be practicing these strategies when they read “Seventh Grade.” (Students will be taking notes on these strategies using copy master I-3 from the Resource Manager for Unit 1.) Go to the next slide. Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1

Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1 Classzone.com Tell students about the vocabulary game resource at classzone.com. If you have appropriate technology, you may want to play a quick game now as a class, or post the website as an extension activity to classroom computers. (The title “classzone.com” is a hyperlink to this page.) Tell students that as you move into Unit 1 you will practice these strategies and be looking at the big question of “What makes a good story?” End of strategy introduction. Refer to the lesson for “Seventh Grade” to continue. Reading Strategies Workshop Grade 7 Unit 1
