What Do Illustrators Do? By: Eileen Christelow Vocabulary Strategy: Context Clues/Sentence Clues L.3.4a; 1.03

instance An instance is an example of something. We like books about animals. For instance, we often read about dogs. What is another instance of an interesting nonfiction topic?

illustrate If you illustrate something, you draw a picture to explain or decorate it. Diagrams, photographs, and maps can be used to illustrate a book. If you wrote a book, how would you illustrate it?

style A style is a particular way of doing something. I like the cartoonist’s style of drawing people. What is your favorite style of drawing?

textures When you touch the surface of things, you feel their textures. Textures can be smooth or rough. What other words can describe textures?

sketches Sketches are simple drawings that are done quickly. Artists often draw sketches in pencil before they begin a painting. Why do you think artists make sketches first?

suggestions When people give suggestions, they offer ideas or plans. Ken made suggestions of places to visit in the city. Has anyone ever given you suggestions about what to do or see?
