Notebook set-up: Grab a composition book from the back counter and set up your table of contents as drawn on the board. A ruler is required for your lines (see if you can find where they are stored in the room!) Number Notebook Pages: Number your new notebook for the first 30 pages. A model for this is on the board. Key Quotes: Write the quotes below in your journal at the top of page 1. “Organization is the key to success” “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail” “Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal.” 1

Eye Walk …tour the room! Think, Pair, Share: QUIET TIME: tour the room without leaving your seat. Make observations about the details of the room and try to determine how the science class operates (Resources? Safety? Routines? Etc.) POD TALK: with the people at your table discuss any possible features/observations that you noticed and talk about why these observations might be important to your success in science class. SHARE OUT: as a class share any ideas that your table discussed.

Combining skill with You Goal: Communicating who you are through a scientific drawing Criteria: A detailed drawing of you or a concept map At least 10 symbols that represent WHO you are A title at the top of the page (First and last name would be a good start) First impression – you are giving me a first impression of what I can expect from you in terms of work produced. Make it count!

SCIENTIFIC DRAWING GUIDELINES Quality: Drawn in colored pencil. Ruler/ straight-edge always used. Plain white paper used when requested by teacher Quality drawing that allows the viewer to see appropriate parts of specimen Spelling is correct Labels: Pictures are labeled on the outside of the drawing. Label lines are parallel and line-up vertically. Label lines do NOT intersect. Labeled correctly and legible Presentation: Title is present and is easy to find. Magnification is present, easy to find, and correct Paper is neat/ not crumpled or ripped
Grading- 20 points total 1. Appropriate Title (2 pts) 2. Drawing or concept map that shows good effort (5 pts) 3. At least 10 labeled elements (5 pts) 4. Neat and organized labels (with a ruler) (5 pts) 5. Neatly colored and/or shaded (3 pts)
