Science Lab Notebooks How to create your lab notebook

People don’t learn from experiences, They learn from processing their experiences -Bob Garmston

Impact of Science Notebooks on Student Achievement Research shows that student understanding and literacy skills improve when students use science notebooks to make sense of their science investigations.

GETTTING STARTED… Title Page Includes: Your Name Science lab Mr. McKenzie 704 Period 7 This is your lab book….You need to decorate this page the way you want to! The Cover will emerge for you as you take this notebook with you from place to place. Some people will doodle, some will cover the cover, some will leave it just the way it is, some will add stickers. It is yours and you can express yourself through the cover, if you so desire.

Don’t forget to let your notebook reflect your… ARTISTIC PERSONALITY

SCIENTIST’S NOTEBOOKS The following slides show real notebooks from scientists who work at Battelle – Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington. Watch carefully as important parts to a scientist’s notebook are shared.

Computational Chemist Neatly written and Sequential Math Data Numbers are Legible

Reference graphs and tables pasted or drawn into notebook Materials Scientist Sample Sketches

Materials Scientist NEVER ERASE….cross out material not needed with only one line May need to review results later

Descriptions written in detail ECOLOGIST Descriptions written in detail NOTICE Signed and Dated

THINKING ABOUT SCIENTISTS’ NOTEBOOKS… What are some of the things you saw in the scientists’ notebooks? Did you notice how neat the entries were? Did you see tables, graphs and drawings? These things should be incorporated into your Lab Book!!

You will put in your Notebook Let’s Look At The Parts You will put in your Notebook

Use the first 1-3 pages for the TABLE OF CONTENTS Use the first 1-3 pages for the Table of Contents… DATE INVESTIGATION PAGE# Draw Columns and Labeled Your Notebook Like the Example Above

Investigation Title and Number Activity/Investigation Title goes on the top line, date at the top left side and page numbers on top right side 1 Date Investigation Title and Number .

When doing a Science Lab . Use the right page for notes, details, etc Use the left page for reflections, drawings, etc. Pg. No. Investigation Title

When Taking Notes The right hand side of the journal is for notes and the left hand side opposite the page is used for important details, vocabulary words and drawings. Title Pg No. Date This section used for notes NOW COMES A BIT OF SECOND HAND LEARNING – A PICTURE WITH LABELED PARTS… From www.pencils.com you can get an official picture of the pencil and its anatomy along with lots of great information. Now we have a term for the metal holder. (if you use a Word Bank, each of the terms students are experiencing, while having a first-hand experience of those terms, can be added to the word bank.) Since you now know the proper term for the metal band, turn back to your own drawing of the pencil and add the term “FERRULE” to your drawing to improve the drawing’s accuracy.

Left Side Right Side Student Output Teacher Input/Content Concept Maps Drawings Reflective Writing Questions Songs Poems Cartoons or cartoon strips Lecture Notes Lab Activities Video Notes Summaries Textbook Notes Procedures for experiments Classroom Specific Information Data and Graphs

OUTPUT (left page) (your interpretation) Example Page: OUTPUT (left page) (your interpretation) INPUT (right page) (notes from teacher)

Graphic Organizer - Student Made Organizer

Video Reflection Video Notes

Example of a Graphic Organizer Fish Bones

Update Your Table of Contents Always Remember Update Your Table of Contents Table of Contents are Important Pages… Don’t forget to update these pages before each activity

Last page Cut and glue 4 Rubrics for assessment questions. They need to be trimmed down so they can all fit!

Index for vocabulary words at the last 7 pages -This is just for the words!

Notebook ppt created by Nancy Ray NOW IT IS TIME After you have made decisions about your title page….start the process of creating you lab notebook You have the rest of the period to complete your title page and table of contents. Notebooks need to be ready to use by August 31. Notebook ppt created by Nancy Ray
