AN EMPTY TOMB

JESUS’ LAST YEAR (32/33 AD)

T THE QUESTION OF TRADITIONS: (Matt.15:1-20; Mk. 7:1-23; John 7:1 Opposition from three principle groups – Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes Jesus questioned them about human traditions Arose over a question of hand washing Jesus deflected the matter to one of human traditions Illustrated by the practice of the corban

TWO RETREATS AND TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS Tyre and Sidon (Mt.15.21-28) Located to the northwest of Galilee His fame had spread to that region Healed a woman’s daughter Caesarea Philippi (Mt.16.13-20;Mk.8:27- 30; Lk.9:18-21)) Who do people say that I am? Who do you say that I am? Ended with Peter’s “Confession” After, Jesus spoke of his impending death

THE TRANSFIGURATION (Mt.17; Mk. 9; Lc. 9) Jesus and his disciples returned from Caesarea Philippi At a certain mountain, he tool Peter, James, and John with him Moses and Elijah appeared with him and his appearance was changed (transfigured) God spoke “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear him.” The event confirmed Jesus’ identity and pre- figured the resurrection

JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM Jesus and his disciples left Galilee for Jerusalem In Judea the Pharisees questioned him about divorce (Matt.19:1-12; Mk.10:1-12) Reflects two main rabbinic schools of thought Hillel School A more liberal view Divorce granted for almost any reason Shammai School A more conservative school Saw infidelity as the only legitimate grounds Jesus answered from the original purpose of marriage, citing Gen.2:24.

JESUS AT THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES Two truths expressed: His message is from God He is from God The woman caught in adultery Two miracles in John that seem more powerful: The man born blind (Jn. 9) The raising of Lazarus (Jn. 11) Two events that showed that Jesus was the Messiah: The triumphal entry (Mt.21:1-17; Mk. 11:1-10; Lk.19:28-40; Jn. 12:12-10)

PREPARING FOR THE CRUCIFIXION

Events leading to the crucifixion The triumphal entry on the Sunday before (Zac. 9.9) Cursing the fig tree (Mt.21.12-14, 20-25) Questions about authority, taxes, resurrection, the greatest commandment The “Olivet discourse” (Mt.24; Mk. 13; Lk. 21) The destruction of the temple The end of the age The Last Supper and the washing the disciple’s feet The betrayal Prayer in the garden The arrest

THE TRIALS Preliminary hearing before Annas, father-in-law of the high priest Caiaphas Illegal because it was at night and not in the council chamber Contradictory evidence presented The council condemned Jesus to death for blasphemy Before Pilate Since the Jewish authorities couldn’t execute anyone, they needed Rome’s approval Pilate found no fault and sent Jesus to Herod Questioned by Herod Antipas Mocked Jesus and put a robe on him Sent him back to Pilate Pilate delivered Jesus to the Jewish leaders after offering to release Barabbas, a noted robber and murderer

THE CRUCIFIXION Jesus beaten and whipped; given the cross-beam of a cross to carry The possession reached Golgotha, at 9:00 am where the crucifixion took place Jesus’ hands and feet were nailed to the cross- beam and lifted up on the vertical post. He died about 3:00 pm and was removed by two Jewish followers of Jesus – Joseph and Nicodemus Placed in a nearby tomb before 6:00 pm on Friday, before the Sabbath began Resurrected early on Sunday morning
