Optické vlákno - technológia Optické vlákno je tenké priehľadné vlákno vyrobené z kremíku alebo z plastu, v telekomunikáciach používané predovšetkým pre vysokorýchlostné prenosy. Z hľadiska použitia pro účely dátového prenosu majú optické vlákna následujúce výhody: veľká šírka pásma nízky útlum (menší počet zosilovačov na optickej trase) odolnosť voči elektromagnetickej interferencii a presluchom bezpečnost prenosu (signál sa nedá jednoducho zachytit) nevedie elektrický prúd (nulová možnosť skratov, požiaru) vyrába sa z kremíku, ktorý je dostupný takmer všade (nejde o strategickú surovinu)

SONET/SDH SDH = Synchronous Digital Hierarchy SONET = Synchronous Optical Networking Je to metóda posielania digitálnej informácie za použitia laserového/LED svetla cez optický kábel. Výhody - synchronizovaný sieťový systém veľkého rozsahu: redukuje nutnosť vyrovnávania (buffering) medzi častami siete

STM-1 Frame Celkový obsah: 9 x 270 bytes = 2430 bytes Hlavička : 9 rows x 9 bytes Dátový tok : 9 rows x 261 bytes Trvanie : 125 μsec Bitrate : 155,520 Mbit/s (2430 x 8 bits x 8000 frames/sec) Kapacita prenosu : 150,336 Mbit/s (2349 x 8 bits x 8000 frames/sec) Interval 125 mikrosekúnd nie je náhodný Ak jeden oktet opustí dátový tok každých 125 mikrosekúnd >> dostaneme rýchlosť 8 bitov za 125 mikrosekúnd, tj. 64 kbit/s, základnú rýchlosť pre dátový prenos v telekomunikačnej sieti. Výhody 1. Extrakcia pomalého dátového toku z rýchleho 2. Nenáročný preklad signálu do SDH/SONET kódovanie

STM-1 Frame Hlavička sekcie – RSOH (Regenerator Section Overhead) – 27 oktetov obsahujúcich informácie o štruktúre prenášaného rámca Line overhead - MSOH (Multiplex Section Overhead) – 45 oktetov obsahujúcich informácie o chybách, údržbe a korekcii dát Pointer – ukazuje začiatočný J1 byte dátového toku v štruktúre prenosového rámca.
