Socialization Becoming Human

Agents of Socialization Prepare us for our place in society

Family Primary Agent = basic sense of self Working Class Concerned with staying out of trouble Use physical punishment Middle Class Concerned with self-expression Reason with children A partial explanation for the differences between middle class and working class socialization is in the types of jobs they old. Parents expect their children to have jobs like theirs. Blue collar work stresses following orders, while middle class work stresses creativity and taking the initiative. This pattern reverses depending on the types of jobs the parents hold. Office workers, for example, have little freedom, while plumbers have more. Middle class parents tend to be activity oriented (team sports)—children need their guidance to develop, while working class parents tend to value free play—children will develop naturally.
