This presentation is based off of the information provided in the ‘What’s Your Thing?’ careers booklets that all year 9 students should have received. The presentation will give a brief overview of the seven priority sectors (identified by the ESB) with the view to encourage children to conduct their own research on the sector(s) or role(s) that may interest them. These priority sectors have been chosen because they all have particularly high skills shortages and have a significant impact on the local economy. Students may already recognise some core skills that they have developed, but might not know what opportunities are available to them locally. In 2015, there were over 75,000 job vacancies in these priority sectors which will be covered in the slides: Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering, Care, Construction, Finance & Insurance, Health, IT, Digital & Creative and Logistics.

Over 49,500 people in Essex work in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering. This sector is comprised of the fields indicated in the chart on this slide. Aerospace, Automotive and Technological engineering are all particular strengths of manufacturing and engineering in Essex. Encourage the students to consider some of the ways in which engineering and manufacturing may apply to some of these fields.

The students should research these, and more, roles online at ‘www The students should research these, and more, roles online at ‘www.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk’. Chelmsford, Basildon and Harlow are some key areas in Essex, each with over 1,000 vacancies in this sector; these districts house companies such as Teledyne e2v, GSK, Raytheon, Konica Minolta and Leonardo. 45% of jobs were advertised at £30,000+. Encourage the students to consider or discuss how they may learn some of the listed skills.

Encourage the students to guess how many residents in Essex will need care in 2030; the answer is over 137,000. The UK as a whole will need to recruit over two million new health and care workers by 2022. Ask the children to consider what they think it is that one would do as a worker in the care sector. Care UK, NHS and Essex County Council all provide a care service to the residents of Essex.

Students can find out more information about roles in this sector by searching for www.HSCIC.gov.uk (Health and Social Care Information Centre). Essex already has over 300,000 residents aged 65 or over, meaning a role in care is becoming increasingly in demand; students should be aware that there are many other factors which impact the care sector, such as using more technology, the life expectancy rate increasing and a growing population. Local councils and the NHS are key employers for the care industry.

The construction industry is the biggest of all sectors within this presentation, with 64,000+ in the industry in Essex. 60% of jobs advertised offered at least £30,000, and construction output is set to grow on average by 2.3% every year until 2020. This slide highlights that there is more to construction than students might initially expect; when considering a construction project, what do students think are required roles for completing a large construction project such as: building a hospital, renovating a train station or demolishing a block of flats?

If students identified other roles that may be relevant to the sector, ask them what skills that they would require and how they could attain them. The Finance & Insurance sector delivers all of our economic functions such as payments, investments, banking, insurance and taxing. DTS Systems, Informa, First Data and B N Y Mellon are all major finance companies with bases in Essex. As well as this, there are the numerous banks which all play a major role in the industry; it is important, however, to emphasise that this sector offers much more than just work in a banking environment.

99% of Senior Financial Service Executives have reported that they are finding it difficult to find well skilled professionals. Whilst this sector has seen significant growth over the last two years, it has also seen a rise in skills shortages over this time period (11%). 12% of the total UK economic output comes from this sector – that’s nearly £200bn. More career options in this sector can be found on ‘www.nationwideeducation.co.uk’ which the students can explore for further information.

Nursing constitutes a major part of this sector; one in two employees is employed as a nurse, and still there is a need for 6,000 more nurses in Essex alone. However, there were over 11,000 vacancies available over 2015 so the opportunities are much more varied. Vacancies in most demand included: Medical Technicians, Psychotherapists, Medical Radiographers, Public Health Managers and Dental Technicians. Approximately 42,000 people are working in this sector in Essex.

Students can use ‘www. healthcareers. nhs Students can use ‘www.healthcareers.nhs.uk’ to discover many more vacancies, as well as what these roles entail. The NHS is a key provider of healthcare, with over 1,300,000 people working in the NHS in the UK. However, in Essex there are around 1,700 healthcare companies meaning the NHS isn’t the only route for students. In Essex almost half of the GPs are due to retire within 15 years, meaning a new generation of GPs is required; this is aggravated by pressure points such as the rate of dementia increasing (up by 84% between 2014-2034) and increasing life expectancy rates.

With over 17,500 job vacancies, this sector has had the highest amount of job opportunities posted in 2016 out of these seven priority sectors. Colchester is becoming a particularly strong district for IT, Digital and Creative, as are places like Chelmsford and Basildon. Over 7,500 companies in Essex function in this sector. In demand job roles include: Java Software Developer, Software Engineer, Journalist and Graphic Designer.

The ESB has combined IT, Digital and Creative industries into one broader sector because of the increasing overlap in these areas. Particularly in creative professions, the need for digital skills has become prominent due to the introduction and improvements of technology; the above roles all require IT, digital and creative skills. Students are encouraged to discuss some of the roles listed and consider what skills would be valuable in each, and whether or not these are digital or creative skills. Students should be encouraged to think about how this sector has impacted their lives; all of their phones, tablets, clothes, food have all been delivered to them (or to the stores they bought them from) through logistics. Thinking beyond the fact that most of their goods use Logistics, students should think about what roles are necessary to make this happen. In demand roles include: Warehouse/Transport Managers, Warehouse Operatives, Relations Officers and Distributions Managers. Pressures on the sector include an aging workforce (~56 years old average age), underperformance in training in the sector and a lack of young adults entering the sector (9% of employees are under 25).

Essex is one of the most well-located regions for Logistics, with four sea ports and two airports. However, Essex’s exporting rate is still very low nationally. Employers include: London Southend Airport, DP World & Port of Tilbury London, Uniserve, TNT, Yodel and the Royal Mail Group. The South East of England employs over 222,000 people in over 11,600 companies making it the biggest logistics sector across the whole of England. More information is available at ‘ciltuk.org.uk’.
