Learning Objective: Agenda Today I will be able to determine the most significant events in the War of the Pacific by creating a timeline. Agenda Learning Objective Timeline Lecture Notes: Ch. 16.2 War in the Pacific (part II) Exit Slip

Classroom Timeline You will create a timeline of the Pacific War with the entire class. With a partner you will make research in one specific event.

Lecture Notes: Ch. 16.2 War in the Pacific Japan invaded America, British, and French controlled lands in Southeast Asia.

Axis Powers Allied Powers Germany Italy Japan Great Britain France US Hungary Romania Bulgaria Allied Powers Great Britain France US Soviet Union (USSR) Australia Belgium New Zealand

Japan Invades US Territories After attacking Pearl Harbor, Japan invaded Guam, Wake Island, & Philippines. Japan succeeded after fully controlling Bataan Peninsula by April 1942.

Japan Invades British Territories Japan seized Hong Kong, Malaysia, & Thailand. Made it easier to also seize Dutch East Indies (Indonesia today)

Japan continued to seize land. Burma (Chinese controlled land) and islands Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and Celebs. Planned on taking over India (British controlled land)

Rape of Nanking (Nanjing) Japanese troops were very cruel to the people of the new colonies they conquered. Women raped & children killed. Beheadings in Nanking during Japanese invasion in the 1930s, before WWII. Chinese people killed in Japanese practice drill, in Nanking.

Baatan Death March Japan seized control of the Philippines in April 9, 1942. US General Douglas MacArthur who led the resistance against Japan evacuated quickly. Left behind 70,000 troops alone. All taken as POW (prisoners of war) by Japanese. Forced to march about 65 miles

Only 54,000 survived after the march Throughout the march, all POW were tortured.

History Channel: Kamikaze Pilots Exactly what does Kamikaze mean? Why were Kamikaze’s willing to make such sacrifices? How did Kamikazes help Japan have an advantage of WWII? Can you think of any other groups of people who seem to have similar believes and are willing to make the same sacrifices? http://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/world-war-ii-history/videos/kamikaze-pilots

Kamikaze Japanese suicide bombers willing to fight till the end and sacrifice their own lives. Dishonorable to forfeit or give up. Great advantage of Japan, to have soldiers that are willing to fight till the end.

B-25 Bombings April 1942, Tokyo and other Japanese cities bombed by US Damage was little but lifted American morale & Japan realized that they too can be hit. Later, the tide begins to turn in favor for the allies.

Battle of the Coral Sea May 1942, Australia & US intercepted a Japanese strike force. Airplanes of each side attacked ships. Stopped Japanese from continuing to conquer.

Battle of Midway Admiral Yamamoto planned on attacking Midway Island (US territory) Americans decoded it & Yamamoto hoped the entire US fleet from Pearl Harbor would move to protect Midway.

Battle of Midway was a huge success for the US June 4, 1942, Japan began to launch its air pilots, meanwhile American air force sneaked behind . 332 Japanese airplanes, 4 aircraft carriers, & 1 support ship destroyed Battle of Midway was a huge success for the US

Island Hopping General Douglas MacArthur plan to island-hop each island towards Japan. To seize the least Japanese defended islands & slowly rid of Japanese control in Southeast Asia

Battle of Guadalcanal Aug 1943, US & Australian troops landed in Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) to prevent Japan from building an air base. 6 months of battle, Japan pulls back Lost 34,000 troops

Exit Slip In your opinion, what was the most significant event in the War of the Pacific? Explain why?

Timeline: Events that favored the Allies during WWII within the Pacific. Which 5 events were the most significant events/battles in the Pacific War began to favor the US? Pick 5 events in your notes. Name Each Event Place them in the order that they occurred. Explain how it is significantly favored the Allies in 1-2 complete sentences. Ex. “It is significant because____________________.” “It favored the Allies or the US because__________.”
