7. How was the fur trade with Native peoples included in France’s policy of mercantilism? When a censitaire obtained a censive , he first had to clear the forest. This could take several years. Only once this work was done was it possible to start cultivating the land and living off the harvest. He worked the land with a plough, planted in the spring and harvested at the end of the month of August. He raised oxen or cows as well as pigs . He also raised turkeys and hens provided what was necessary to survive.
