Biology EOC Review: Unit 1 Intro to Biology

Key Concepts: Scientific Method There are 7 Steps in the Scientific Method Make an observation Ask a question Do research Form a hypothesis Conduct an experiment to test your hypothesis Analyze data Form a conclusion and share it!

Key Concepts: Scientific Method Good experiments have: 1 independent variable (thing that is changed) 1 dependent variable (thing that is measure) Lots of constants (things that stay the same) A control (something to compare to)

Key Concepts: Scientific Method Example Experiment: Sally wants to measure how growth of roses is affected by sunlight. After doing her research, she learns that rose plants grow best with 8 hours of sunlight. She grows two rose plants, a control and an experimental. She gives the control plant 8 hours of sunlight and the experimental plant 4 hours of sunlight. She waters them both the same amount and plants them at the same time, in the same type of soil. She measures their growth in centimeters each day. a. What is her independent variable? b. What is her dependent variable? c. What is her control? d. What are her constants?

Key Concepts: Scientific Method Example Experiment Answers: What is her independent variable? The thing Sally changes – the amount of sunlight b. What is her dependent variable? The thing Sally measures – the growth in centimeters c. What is her control? The one that you give the recommended amount to – Plant A d. What are her constants? Type of soil, amount of water, time planted
