K jazykovej politike Európskej komisie EURÓPSKA ZNAČKA a EURÓPSKY UČITEĽ JAZYKOV ROKA 2010 Bratislava 24. september 2010

A snapshot of the official languages of the EU today

„Úradné a pracovné jazyky orgánov Spoločenstva sú francúzština, holandčina, nemčina a taliančina.” článok 1 nariadenia Rady 1/58, pôvodné znenie 53 years ago …

„Úradnými jazykmi a pracovnými jazykmi inštitúcií Únie sú angličtina, bulharčina, čeština, dánčina, estónčina, fínčina, francúzština, gréčtina, holandčina, írčina, lotyština, litovčina, maltčina, maďarčina, nemčina, poľština, portugalčina, rumunčina, slovenčina, slovinčina, španielčina, švédčina a taliančina.” článok 1 nariadenia Rady 1/58, najnovšie znenie … and now

Multilingualism costs less than you might think. Before the latest enlargement, the DGT cost €230 million per year. After the nine new languages were added, the cost of the DGT went up to €320 million per year in 2005, or €0.7% per citizen per year. The cost of all the translation services in all the EU institutions put together is €807 million per year. It’s a big figure in absolute terms but it’s the equivalent of only €1.78 per citizen per year. The cost of both translation and interpretation in all the EU institutions is around €1bn, or €2.28 per citizen per year. Consider what you get in return: you know exactly what the EU is doing in your name and what your rights and responsibilities are, and you play a full part in building it – all in your own language. Democracy has a cost! But it’s worth it.
