Corporations Define the term corporations Identify examples Evaluate their presence in sport Using sporting examples, explain the view that many teams and athletes are influenced by corporations (6 marks)

What is a corporation? Bodies that are set up to perform a function. Can relate to business, government, the local council or sport. In Britain most corporations were arrived at by ‘historical accident’ Norton and Heath Factory Team (1878) Became a professional team in 1885 Took it’s current name as Manchester United Football club 1902 Initially the corporation was geographically based-until the level of players didn’t match the level of the league

What is sponsorship? Money given to an athlete to have them represent the company name. Some sponsorship deals pay more to the athlete than they get through their professional sporting contracts. Andy Murray- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37861918 This can make them more accountable to their sponsor than their sport. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sports/brazilian-soccer- legend-ronaldinho-loses-lucrative-coca-cola-sponsorship-deal-sipping- pepsi-article-1.1112211

TV Corporations dictate what time a sporting event takes place, for example sky Monday or Friday night football. TV Corporations dictate when the commercial breaks take place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9cUytejf1k
