Lesson 3: The Parts of a Graph The x-axis is where the independent variable is. The y-axis is where the dependent variable is. Graphs need: A title with both variables, labeled x and y axis, and appropriate increments.

New Vocabulary X-Axis- The horizontal side of a graph where the x value (independent variable) is. Y-Axis- The vertical side of a graph where the y value (dependent variable) is.

X-Axis (Independent Variable) The independent variable does not change. Example: How many hours per week does each student in MLO watch TV? Options: At least- 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours, more than 5 hours. Where would these options go on a line plot? Our responses will be different, but do the options change?

Y-axis (Independent Variable) The dependent variable changes Example how many hours per week do you watch each category of TV: Cartoons, drama, comedy, sports, or other? Do the categories change? What will change because of the different categories?

Whiteboard Activity I will give you titles for plots and graphs. We will decide what the variables are and whether each variable is Y (dependent) or X (independent.)

Example #1 How many students in MLO pick the Celtics as their favorite basketball team? 1st Variable: 2nd Variable:

Example #2 What are MLO’s favorite subjects in school (Math, science, ELA, social studies, or art?) 1st Variable: 2nd Variable:

Example #3 How many homework assignments has MLO completed so far this year? 1st Variable: 2nd Variable:

HW: X or Y? You will be given a list of graph titles and the two variables shown on a graph. Write X next to the independent variable and Y next to the dependent variable. Then create your own example.

Ticket to Quit How many people prefer each type of soda: Coke, Mountain Dew, Sprite, or Sunkist. The type of soda is the _____ variable. The number of people picking each soda is the _____ variable.
