Proposal for an Obs4ECV Dataset and OpenSearch Capability for ESG John Bates Chair, CEOS-CGMS Working Group on Climate

CEOS-CGMS WGClimate Goal and Objectives The over-arching goal of the CEOS/CGMS Working Group on Climate (WG Climate) will be to improve the systematic availability of Climate Data Records through the coordinated implementation, and further development of the architecture for climate monitoring from space. Objectives Provision of a structured, comprehensive and accessible view as to what Climate Data Records are currently available from satellite missions of CEOS and CGMS members or their combination; Creation of the conditions for delivering further Climate Data Records, including multi-mission Climate Date Records, through best use of available data to fulfil GCOS requirements (e.g. by identifying and targeting cross-calibration or re-processing gaps/shortfalls ); Optimization of the planning of future satellite missions and constellations to expand existing and planned Climate Data Records, both in terms of coverage and record length, and to address possible gaps with respect to GCOS requirements

The Major Activity of WGClimate is Collection, Analysis, and Action Plan Using an ECV Inventory

ECV Inventory Challenges and the new paradigm for Earth observation data discovery Must be exact match with ECV/CDR name Must be available from an EO data service Must provide documentation Data call not effective and does not reach entire ECV community Is there an existing effort that has these characteristics that we might build upon??? Yes, Observations for model intercomparisons (Obs4MIPs) Uses Climate-Forecast (CF) name convention allowing exact match Uses Earth System Grid (ESG) EO-compatible data service Contains most documentation, needs ECV Extension Can build ECV inventory dynamically by finding ‘ECV’ tag from ESG catalog Define Obs4ECV as sub-set of Obs4MIPS effort within WCRP DAC

New Paradigm for Earth observation discovery and metadata harvesting Add ESG OpenSearch Compliant MIPs – Obs4ECVs, Obs4MIP6s, CMIP-6, etc.

OpenSearch OpenSearch is a collection of simple formats for the sharing of search results. The OpenSearch description document format can be used to describe a search engine so that it can be used by search client applications. The OpenSearch response elements can be used to extend existing syndication formats, such as RSS and Atom, with the extra metadata needed to return search results.
