EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ introduction ● the European reality Europe as a continent is a collection of countries with different backgrounds The standards of medical education from undergraduate to resident training and postgraduate training and to professional competence are high but vary across different countries The standards of speciality training are also very demanding but different among all European countries j.mineiro 11

EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ interim exam 2011 ● how can we overcome these ratios? ▲ we have to address two different issues : A.Exam preparation B.Final assessment ■ Exam preparation – Interim Exam + Review Courses ● Final Assessment (EBOT Fellowship Examination) : -separated written part I + invited all european speciality societies to join the writing committee + will have a clinical part III (in each country with their own national faculty & language) j.mineiro 11
EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ interim exam 2011 ● how to test the program ▲ we had established the requirements/technical details together with the program designer in accordance to our needs ■ upon receiving the “go ahead” – we started contacting the different hospitals (!! mid april 2011 !!) ● for this trial we have used 50 new MCQ for the interim exam – some from our own MCQ bank + other written by different EBOT Examiners from across Europe j.mineiro 11
EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ interim exam 2011 ● what was the sample ▲The exam took place on the 18th of May all across Europe between 10 to 11:30 TMG – two to three hospitals in different countries were invited to join this project ■ 15 hospitals (out of 20) – in 10 different EU countries participated ● 114 residents took part in this trial – 106 were scored (data on 8 was not uploaded) j.mineiro 11

EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ written part I ● in the different countries throughout Europe - Pearson Vue Centres 205 applications for part I which took place on the 9th of June in different test centres all over Europe (cooperation with Pearson Vue) EU candidates: 64 Non-EU candidates: 141 174 candidates accepted to sit exam 109 took part I 60 (55%) candidates succeeded j.mineiro 11

EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ what is the purpose ● EBOT Interim exam Project that will help preparation for final assessment An interim exam that would be available for trainees throughout residence in different languages - Run yearly for all residents around EU – voluntary (?) - Cover the whole spectrum of Orthopaedics and Trauma Tool to monitor how residents / department are doing throughout the residency j.mineiro 11
EBOT examination in 2011 ◙ conclusion ● EBOT Exam is gaining broader base of support Europe wide ● restriction to EU + Non EU working in Europe ● more and more the standards of the exam are being accepted ● it vital to link this assessment at the end of training to the european curriculum + log book ● introduction of the clinical part III will enable a direct national input ● it will improve the outcome of orthopaedic residency in Europe j.mineiro 11
