Tapping Those Apps… Making it Hip (and Easier) to Flip Amanda Malatlian Kris Porazzi Sorrells

Our Story Flipping off and on for several years Unit Out of the classroom Positive Feedback from students Videos available for review Spent more class time collaborating with peers More Homework assistance Encouraged to go the next step 2012 – 2013 first “full” flip

All students worked at the same rate Videos/Exploration at home Algebra Two Honors Synchronous All students worked at the same rate Videos/Exploration at home Class: Follow-up & Practice Problems Videos made using Camtasia then moved to iPad Pre-Calculus Honors Asynchronous Students had deadlines but could work at their own pace A week to a full unit’s material online Class: videos, follow-up, and practice Videos made using Camtasia

Our Story

Student Comments “Being able to replay parts of the videos allows me to solidify an idea in my head. Also getting more time with the teacher really helps me. Having videos for homework majorly reduces the amount of time I would have to spend in comparison to struggling over the practice problems without help. I just really love the flipped classroom and it's a more stress-free situation where I can control how quickly the lesson is coming at me, so I can process it.”

Our Story

Student Comments “It challenged me to manage my time well and keep up, but it also gave me more flexibility in terms of time.” “It has helped me by making me slow down and actually absorb more of the information rather than speed by and guess.”

Not All “Roses” International or ELL Student Required more talking (in English) during class “I feel more comfortable to listen in the class” Escapees Were able to get by without really doing the practice problems Status Quo “I prefer the traditional way of learning, partially because it is what I am use to and what I have always done.”
