Connector Which descriptive words do you think of when you look at this picture? Why might people like to live in this area? Why might some people be worried about living in this area?

Learning Outcomes All pupils can identify what makes a global citizen and why being a global citizen is important. All pupils can cooperate effectively to suggest solutions to a global issue and evaluate the effectiveness of their ideas.

Vocabulary Citizen Global Disaster Action plan Pattern Community Humanitarian Aid Activist Campaign Tribal group Sanitation Resource Displaced

Starter Compare the map on page 54-55 with the map on the board. What is the difference between them? Name the countries on the IWB

Task In your book put the title: Am I a global citizen? Put the date and underline both with a ruler.

S. America North America Central America UK Europe Japan Australia Africa New Zealand Bangladesh S.E Asia India

Activity Which areas of the world are most at risk? How likely are we to have disasters in the UK compared to other countries? Are there any maps that surprise you? Why? Select the 4 true statements from the list and copy them into your book

Model answer Storms A Large number of people are killed by storms in SE ASIA There are also many people killed by storms in Central America. Few people are affected by storms in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The countries where most people are killed are islands or countries with a coastline that is low land.

Task Choose one map and describe the pattern it shows. Explain why some countries are more at risk from this hazard than others?

What is the role of the Global community when a disaster strikes?

When there is a disaster, what can different individuals, organizations and other countries do? In your groups can you make a mind map to show this. Look at the example on the board and make your own.

Review and Revise Swap books with someone else. Read their work carefully IN PENCIL write one target and one good thing about their work When you get your book back, use the feedback and see if you can improve your work.

Task You will be working in groups to develop an Action Plan to assist people who have been affected by the humanitarian disaster in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A humanitarian disaster in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Your brief… DR Congo has a history of civil war. There is still conflict between different groups of people including the government and tribal groups. The groups are fighting over natural resources and land. In August 2008 there was fighting between rebel tribal groups and the government, causing a large number of people to flee from their homes. There are now an estimated 250 000 displaced people living in refugee camps. © George Mulala © George Mulala

Refugee Camps Overcrowded Lack of food No running water Shelters made from wood and cloth Unclean water Severe lack of sanitation Disease spreads quickly Photo by Flickr user cyclopsr and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence. People feel vulnerable and unsafe Kidnapping

Are you a global citizen? The UN are trying to help by sending soldiers into the area to help restore peace, but what can you do? © Sebastian Bolesch Your mission: Working in groups, create an emergency Action Plan to help the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Review Select a representative from your combined group who will explain to the rest of the class who you are, what you have decided to include in your Action Plan, and how you are going to do it. Be prepared to answer some questions about your plans! As a class, discuss how effective you think each group's plan would be, and which you think should be made a priority to give maximum help to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Homework Choose a recent disaster and make a 3 slide power point to show the causes and effects of the disaster and suggestions on the help that would improve conditions for people.
