The Roaring Twenties!

America After WWI President Wilson had become a symbol of Democracy around the world. The Treaty of Versailles became less about a treaty and more about revenge for the Allies of the US. Germany was faced with a mountain of reparations (monetary repayments).

America After WWI The U.S. was did not feel the full impact because no fighting took place here. Because the US was not involved for too long, not much of the population was effected either. America was becoming richer because it had to help rebuild Europe - this made factories very busy! It is important to remember that for many Americans (namely African Americans) life was still difficult. Jim Crow and segregation was still around.

The Roaring Twenties! Because America became one of the world’s super powers and much richer after World War I, the 1920s was a time of economic growth in the U.S.

The Roaring Twenties Not only did America become richer, but culture in America changed a lot after World War I. This time period is known as the Roaring Twenties! Roaring Twenties - A period in the 1920s when the social, musical, and artistic culture took off and changed America.

Social Culture Women started to break away from old fashioned rules about what they should be like. They started wearing different clothing and being more independent. Some of these women were known as Flappers.

Social Culture Other women started demanding more rights such as the right to vote! The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote on August 18, 1920.

Increased Movement The 20’s also led to an increase in movement to the Northern and Midwestern cities by Southern African Americans. This would be known as the Great Migration. They were looking for work and for social equality.

Economic Culture America was wealthy after WWI because it was one of the only developed countries in the world that wasn’t destroyed by the war. The U.S. was also rich because of all the inventions developed.

Artistic Culture Many people started experimenting with different types of art forms in the 1920s. It was an explosion of new ideas!

Harlem Renaissance African Americans from all over the country started to move to Harlem, New York, to celebrate their heritage. In Harlem, people wrote poetry, stories, music, and painted to show how African Americans were being treated and to bring pride to the African American community. The Harlem Renaissance helped start the Civil Rights movement for African Americans.
