How to Read Literature Like a Professor Summer Homework How to Read Literature Like a Professor

Which chapter did you choose to apply to your novel? Pair up with a student that chose a DIFFERENT chapter. Share your 12 sentence paragraphs with each other. Explain background information as needed. Pair up with another student and repeat. Share both book title and chapter with the class.

Writing Assignments for HTRLLAP Which two chapters did you choose? With your hip buddy, share the chapters you chose and give a brief summary of your writing. Get up! Walk at least 6 feet away from your desk and find another partner to share your work with. Share with the class – 4 volunteers.

The keys to close reading Memory Where have you seen this before? Movies? Other books? Music? Plays? Poetry? TV? Symbol What does it mean? “Everything is a symbol of something, it seems, until proven otherwise” (Foster). Pattern Archetypes, elements of style, literary techniques

Let’s try it.

What did you see? Memory: Romeo and Juliet Symbols: iceberg (obstacle) boat (sinks like their love) necklace (class difference) Patterns: star crossed lovers, parallels to play (party scene, Rose is betrothed, Mercutio, balcony scene, rich guy tries to kill Jack, etc.)

What does this have to do with AP LIT? Every time you read something for this class you should keep in mind these three items. They will be the keys to your success in analysis, note taking and essay writing. Memory Where have you seen this before? Movies? Other books? Music? Plays? Poetry? TV? Symbol What does it mean? “Everything is a symbol of something, it seems, until proven otherwise” (Foster). Pattern Archetypes, elements of style, literary techniques

ALL Summer Homework will be collected on Monday, September 11th Friday: You will be writing your first in-class timed essay. You will be given 3 different prompt options all involving your choice novel. You will have the class period. When the bell rings you will need to turn in what you have done. (Don’t worry if you don’t finish; someday you will.) 
