English Class Basics: Technology Constantly growing and preparing for further adaptation is a basic standard for learning with technology and working in this century.

AUP You must have your Acceptable Use Policy signed and on file. The AUP governs what you can and cannot do while using computers at Pacifica. The AUP follows the same spirit as all other rules and codes of conduct at Pacifica: behave in a way that enhances your learning and allows others to learn in a safe environment of mutual respect both physically and electronically.

Email Account: Professional For Ms. Reed’s class much of our work is enhanced by our ready access to technology. To use this gift well, we must be able to form close groups and working relationships both in the physical space of the classroom and in cyberspace. One key item you will need to participate in many of the websites we will use in class is an email account. While you may have other personal accounts, the one you will create and use for English is to be purely academic in its use. In other words it must be PROFESSIONAL.

Email Account: Naming “First Name.Last Name.PHS@gmail.com” Most organizations, colleges, and universities have common “Naming Conventions” for the way that things like email and user names are set up. That will be true for your new email address. Our class naming convention will be: “First Name.Last Name.PHS@gmail.com” For example: Ariel.Triton.PHS@gmail.com Your email, just like all other personal information is confidential: it will not be shared with sources outside of school or even within school without permission. Because of this Code of Professionalism, you are also expected to use this email for school work only.

Email Account: Set It Up Create your account by going to Gmail’s “Create an Account” page.

Email Account: Set It Up Remember, your account must be First.Last.PHS@gmail.com When you are finished, submit your completed email address to Ms. Reed by filling in the following survey page. The survey will allow Ms. Reed to start the enrollment process of other class sites as well as have a back up record if you forget. You may choose to have her record your password (not that she will ever really look at it or hack your account) or not.

Wiki: The super basics Our main center for working, collaborating, submitting work is our class wiki. There is one wiki for College Prep classes (both 9th and 11th grade) and one for Honors. A good way to understand the absolute fundamental of what a wiki is and does is to watch this Common Craft TeacherTube video called “Wikis in Plain English.”
