POETRY TERMS and DEFINITIONS
TERMS Anthology – collection of poems grouped together Assonance – vowel rhyme – repetition of a pattern of similar sounds Consonance – repetition of the same consonant Chorus – part of poem repeated after each verse Envoi or Envoy – short final verse of a poem
Terms Line/Verse – the main unit of all poems Rhythm – pattern of stresses in a line of verse/line of poetry Stanza – a set amount of lines grouped by rhythmical pattern or meter Refrain – a repeated verse or phrase usually after the chorus or stanza
Stanza A set amount of verses or lines grouped by rhythmical patter and meter Stanza names according to number of lines: 2 lines = couplet 3 lines = tercet 4 lines = quatrain 5 lines = cinquain Stanzas can have rhythm and rhyme or just be a blank verse!
Rhythm & Meter Rhythm – pattern of stresses within a line of verse Meter – regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables Every verse has a meter which is measured or explained in a sequence of feet Foot – sequence of a type of syllable iambic pentameter (5) daDumdaDumdaDumdaDumdaDum To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells (Ode to Autumn by John Keats)
